Thugs bash Muslim schoolgirl wearing hijab in Melbourne suburb

Teenage thugs bashed a young Muslim girl wearing a hijab in what has been described as a racial attack in Wantirna South.

The high school student was walking home from Westfield Knox along Stud Rd when she was set upon by a group of teenagers, according to Knox councillor Joe Cossari, who said it was a racial attack. The teen was punched to the ground and kicked, but didn’t report the assault to police because she feared ­reprisals, Cr Cossari said.

Councillors condemned the violence after hearing details at a recent ­council meeting.

“We have to defend the right of all citizens so that our people can walk freely without fear,” Cr Cossari told the council meeting. “As a Christian and an Australian I will defend the rights of all religious groups and, in this case, the Muslim brothers and sisters of this municipality.

“To bash up a young girl because of what she was wearing is unacceptable. I will not tolerate this type of activity against any citizens of this municipality or this country. We pride ourselves on ­being a multicultural society, we talk about multiculturalism in our policies, but having this happen on our front door is not acceptable.”

Anne Marie Waters and Dispatch International – one more time

Anne Marie Waters open letter to Miliband

The appalling Anne Marie Waters, who is a member of the National Secular Society council and spokesperson for the anti-sharia campaign One Law For All, has featured on Islamophobia Watch a number of times. (So many times, in fact, that even I’m getting bored with the subject – which is why it’s taken me a while to get round to writing this piece.)

In addition to whipping up fear and hatred of Islam through the NSS and OLFA, Waters also hoped to acquire a parliamentary platform for her views, via the Labour Party. Unfortunately for Waters, the latter ambition proved irreconcilable with her other activities. Her attempt earlier this year to win selection as the Labour candidate for the Brighton Pavilion constituency was defeated, thanks not least to Andy Newman’s admirable work (see here and here) in exposing her Islamophobic views.

Last month Waters resigned from the Labour Party, announcing her decision in an open letter to Ed Miliband that was published in the “counterjihad” newspaper Dispatch International, to which she is now a regular contributor. The reasons Waters gave for leaving the party were that she was opposed to Labour’s support for multiculturalism, to Ken Livingstone’s selection as Labour candidate in the 2012 London mayoral election, and to Labour’s “introduction of insidious hate speech laws”.

Nazir-Ali scaremongers over sukuk

Michael Nazir-Ali Triple JeopardyFormer bishop of Rochester, Michael Nazir-Ali, warns that plans for the UK to become the first non-Muslim country to sell a sharia-complaint bond could have “unforeseen consequences”.

Nazir-Ali told the Daily Telegraph: “This means that the Government itself will be subject to sharia in its dealings on these bonds. At the moment the issue is pretty modest, but how much will it grow? There’s a lot of liquidity out there and it could grow pretty rapidly, and then you may face a situation where a major part of your financial system is governed by sharia-compliant considerations.”

Restore Australia to target Queensland church’s interfaith event

Restore Australia Resist IslamThe head of a movement which opposes multiculturalism is rallying troops to target a Buderim church information event on Islam.

St Mark’s Anglican Church will screen the documentary The Imam and the Pastor on November 2 at 2pm. The screening will be followed by a forum discussion on Christianity and Islam with community worker Dave Andrews and community activist Nora Amath.

Mike Holt, the chief executive officer of Restore Australia, has circulated an email seeking people concerned about “creeping izlamisation” to attend the meeting with coordinated questions.

Sentence for EDL thug ‘too lenient’

Hull North MP Diana Johnson has written to the Justice Secretary to express concerns at the “lenient” sentence given to an EDL thug who punched a man during a march. As previously reported in the Mail, John Claydon, 46, laughed as he left court after receiving an 18-month community order for attacking anti-fascist protester David Harding outside St Stephen’s shopping centre.

Claydon, who had a string of convictions for violence, was also ordered to do 100 hours’ unpaid work and pay £500 compensation. But Ms Johnson believes the sentence, passed by Recorder Michael Smith, was too lenient and has written to Justice Secretary Chris Grayling with her concerns.

Martin Lennon, Ms Johnson’s researcher, said: “Diana wrote to Mr Grayling because she was concerned by the sentencing guidelines employed by the judge in this case. Diana felt that there were several aggravating factors in this case that were not properly taken into account. This was a particularly vicious attack, which was not provoked. Moreover, Mr Claydon had a history of violence.”

‘Multicultural celebration’ against EDL demonstration

A “peaceful multicultural celebration” is to be held on the same day as the English Defence League is planning a protest in Sheffield.

The EDL is holding a demonstration at Sheffield Lane Top on Saturday, September 21, about plans to convert The Pheasant pub into a mosque – even though the proposals have been withdrawn.
