How the Henry Jackson Society promotes anti-Muslim bigotry

Robin ShepherdMedia coverage of the police figures for so-called “honour” crimes in the UK, revealed by the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation in association with the Guardian, was generally fairly balanced, avoiding the Islamophobic stereotyping of the Muslim community that you might have anticipated. Even the Daily Star managed to report the issue without blaming Muslims.

The exception was the Daily Mail, which headlined its report “Alarming rise of Muslim ‘honour attacks’ in the UK”. This irresponsible accusation against British Muslims was predictably endorsed by Robert Spencer at Jihad Watch (“The Daily Mail headline goes straight for the elephant in the room: this is largely a phenomenon within Muslim communities in Britain”), while his friend Pamela Geller of course agreed (“As Muslim immigration increases, so does sharia, misogyny and gendercide”).

The ignorance and bigotry underpinning such views hardly need underlining. As a Metropolitan Police spokesperson told the Mail: “Honour-based violence cuts across all cultures, nationalities and faith groups – it is a worldwide problem.” Honour attacks are a problem in Hindu-majority India, for example, but are not evident in the world’s most populous Muslim country, Indonesia. Even contributors to the comments on the Mail‘s article were able to make the obvious point that honour-based violence is a cultural rather than a religious phenomenon.

American football team owner’s faith stirs stupidity

Jacksonville JaguarsLast week, it was announced that the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL team had been sold to super-successful Illinois businessman Shahid Khan. The deal was reported to be worth $760 million and includes a somewhat controversial first for the league.

Khan is a Pakistani-born Muslim, and will be the first of his faith to own a National Football League team.

The Jacksonville Jaguars press release talking up the sale didn’t mention the fact that Khan was Muslim. That was probably a good thing – on the same day the sale was announced, it was also revealed that long-time head coach Jack Del Rio had been fired and assistant coach Mel Tucker – an African-American – would be taking over.

For redneck racist types – and in North Florida there are more than a few – the fact that the white owner and white coach of their hometown NFL franchise were replaced by a Pakistani-born Muslim and a black guy was just too much to take, especially in ONE DAY.

Almost on cue, conservative news sites were rife with ugly comments about Khan’s big play.

Sweden: first police cadet with a headscarf

Donna Eljammal

Donna Eljammal (26) is Sweden’s first police cadet with a headscarf. She had wanted to join the police long before she started wearing a hijab.

“Ever since I was little. I want to help others and move instead of just sitting in front of a computer.”

A few years ago it became possible to wear a headscarf or turban as part of the police uniform, after some debate.

Police appeal for help in identifying EDL thugs

EDL thugs wanted

Last week at Newcastle Crown Court nine EDL supporters were sentenced for their part in an attack on an Irish centre where a Socialist Workers Party meeting had been scheduled to take place. After the SWP called off the meeting for fear of violence, the EDL attacked staff at the centre instead. Six of the gang were given prison sentences and three others received suspended jail terms.

Police have now released CCTV pictures of a further six suspects who are wanted in connection with the attack.

‘They’re like cockroaches’ – how ACT! for America incites hatred against Muslims

Act! for America logoLast week the St. Louis chapter of Brigitte Gabriel’s ACT! for America held a meeting at City Hall in Crestwood, Missouri, under the title “What America Must Learn from the Fort Hood Massacre”, which featured the screening of a DVD lecture by the executive director of ACT!, Guy Rodgers.

Terry Jones and Nachum ShifrenA diverse array of UC Irvine students were prepared to protest against a controversial pastor after it was announced he might speak on campus.
