Welsh Muslims report widespread racist abuse

RCC reportThe Institute of Race Relations draws our attention to a Wales Online report on a new study of racism and race equality in Wales by Professor Heaven Crawley that was commissioned by Race Council Cymru.

It found people from minority ethnic backgrounds in Wales are still experiencing racism in health, education and housing services, as well as in employment. And in many cases when racism occurs, it found victims are not reporting or challenging it, but instead changing their behaviours, language and clothing to “fit in”.

Honour-based violence in Swansea

The parents of a 17-year-old girl, jailed for attacking her because she was going out with a black man, have been called “disgraceful” by a judge.

David Champion, 50, from Swansea, and his wife Frances, hit daughter Jane for “bringing shame” on the family. The father also abused her boyfriend Alfonce Ncube with racist language before grabbing and kicking him.

Champion was jailed for 12 months at Swansea Crown Court, and his wife to nine months. Both admitted assault.

The father also admitted a charge of racially aggravated assault against Mr Ncube. Frances Champion admitted using threatening, abusive or offensive words or behaviour to cause racially aggravated fear or provocation of violence towards Mr Ncube.

BBC News, 6 August 2012

A reminder that “honour-based violence” is not a phenomenon restricted to communities of recent migrant origin. The Daily Mail has covered this story – but, oddly enough, doesn’t regard the religious beliefs of the convicted parents as at all relevant to the case. Another of those “what if they were Muslim?” moments.

NF supporter arrested during Swansea protest against ‘Muslim rapists’

Swansea NF demoA 21-year-old man has been arrested during a demonstration by Far Right campaigners in Swansea.

Police intervened during the demonstration in the city centre on Saturday organised by the South Wales National Front in Union Street.

Officers made the arrest for an alleged racial public order offence. They also confiscated banners and posters to ensure there was no breach of the peace.

The 21-year-old man is believed to be from Swansea and has been released on bail following the arrest.

South Wales Evening Post, 9 July 2012

As the NF’s own report makes clear, the demonstration was directed against “Muslim rapists” and involved protestors brandishing placards featuring the popular racist slogan “Our children are not halal meat”.

His friend Richard Orzel, a plasterer of Kensington Gardens, Newport, replied to the post writing: “Spit on the ****” to which Rogers replied saying he would have “kicked the **** out of him” if there hadn’t been any CCTV around.

Llanelli: cameras aim to boost safety at mosque site

Llanelli mosque frontSecurity cameras are set to be installed at Llanelli’s mosque, where Muslims “have suffered abuse for 14 years”.

Funding has been confirmed for CCTV cameras to cover an area of Station Road, following claims of abuse against people visiting the mosque to pray.

The problem came to a head when a group of elderly women marking the festival of Ramadan last year were followed into the building by two men.

Press officer for Llanelli’s Ethnic Minority Help Association, Anne Stevens-Bevan, who has fought tirelessly for improved security at the mosque, welcomed the news.

She said: “I am absolutely thrilled that there will be CCTV there. I went to the Muslim Council for Great Britain and the Home Secretary, and everybody listened and saw the desperate need for something to be done.

“The people attending the mosque have suffered abuse for 14 years, but they have shown exemplary behaviour. It is heartening to think that this year at Ramadan the same fate will not befall the people attending the mosque. I have had so many phone calls about this, and everyone is chuffed.”

Attacks on Llanelli’s mosque prompt security rise

Llanelli mosque frontSecurity measures have been taken at Llanelli’s mosque following claims of attacks on the building.

Metal bars have been fitted over the Station Road mosque’s front window after reports were made that the glass was smashed while someone was praying inside. The incident came just months after the door was kicked through and a group of elderly women were followed in.

And police are now conducting high visibility patrols in the area to calm the concerns of people using the mosque.

Press officer for Llanelli’s Ethnic Minority Help Association Anne Stevens-Bevan said she was working hard to ensure people feel safe when they go to pray.

“I met with the police last week and I am negotiating with them and the Muslim Council for Great Britain to see what advice they can give,” she said. “There have been problems with things thrown at the window and people being chased and abused physically and mentally. The trouble has been on-going for 14 years, but I have made a promise that it won’t happen again because it’s just not fair.”

Mrs Stevens-Bevan said she was “sickened to the stomach” to hear that the window was smashed while someone was praying. “It should be a world of calmness,” she said. “Having to put bars over the window takes away from that – it takes away from the sense of peace.”

She added that while lighting would soon be installed near the mosque, efforts were still being made to have CCTV cameras installed.

“The mosque is well used – and by some very elderly people – and they should feel safe,” she said. “They get mouthy people passing, and these words can build up and rob them of their self-esteem. People don’t forget things like that, and for the women who were followed into the mosque it must be in their minds all the time. The mosque is a sacred place, like our churches and chapels, and we will not give up until people feel safe to go there.”

PC Dylan Davies said: “When they reported the criminal damage to me I did advise them to think about taking some security measures, which they did by adding the grill to the window. Having said that, this is a one-off instance. I am aware of concerns the people using the mosque have, and I am keeping an eye on the building and making sure that there are regular high visibility patrols in and around the area.”

Further attack on Llanelli mosque

Llanelli mosque frontLast September the mosque in the Welsh town of Llanelli was attacked. Thugs racially abused a group of elderly women who were entering the mosque and kicked the door in. As a result, extra CCTV cameras were installed.

We are told that there was a second attack on the mosque in February, when the windows were smashed while someone was praying inside. As you can see from the photo, the building has now been fitted with a window grille in addition to the existing steel gate in front of the door (cf. earlier photo here).

Judge criticises sentencing powers for racist’s anti-Muslim tirade

A judge has hit out at sentencing powers that prevented him from handing out a tougher punishment to a self-confessed racist who threatened to blow up a mosque. Judge Niclas Parry said he found it “quite staggering” a religiously aggravated public order offence could only attract a fine as a punishment for former soldier John Parkin.

Parkin, who was jailed for 10 months for being in breach of an earlier suspended sentence, escaped separate punishment on two charges of religiously aggravated public order offences following two separate outbursts against Muslims in Rhyl.

On one occasion, Parkin, 26, of River Street, Rhyl, was seen near Ellis’ public house in Water Street in Rhyl, where there was also a mosque, in a drunken condition and he was warned about his behaviour.

The licensee heard him say: “I have got guns. I want to shoot Muslims in the head.” He spoke about blowing up the mosque and the licensee found his remarks extremely racist and offensive, the court heard.

‘Marching through Wales – the Islamist Stormtroopers of the future?’

Thus the headline to a report by the British National Party. They have uploaded a video of the annual procession held by Shia Muslims in Newport to mark the Day of Ashura. According to the BNP, this is a “striking example of the steady colonisation of our country”.

All is not lost, though: “The good news is that these Muslim colonists are still massively outnumbered in Wales, and indeed through the UK as a whole. It is not too late to both stop and reverse the immigration tide. But time is running short.”

Not that short, you might think. Shia Muslims currently comprise around 0.3% of the population of the UK.
