Florida: school board faces down anti-Muslim bigots

Parents Say NO to HAMAS!

Some wore neckties that resembled U.S. flags. Some were parents or grandparents. One was not yet even a teenager.

They all were united by a mission. And one by one, the speakers took the Hillsborough County School Board to task Tuesday over what they said was the improper teaching of Islam in a high school classroom last year by the leader of the local Council on American-Islamic Relations.

They said the presentation by CAIR’s Hassan Shibly – made to an advanced-placement world history class in November at Steinbrenner High – was a threat to children, to schools, to America.

Protests against Maryland mayor attending prayer breakfast featuring notorious Islamophobe

William G. BoykinProtesters are pressuring Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan to shun a prayer breakfast that features a former high-ranking Army officer who has made anti-Muslim remarks.

Leaders of People for the American Way, a left-leaning advocacy group based in Washington, say they have sent hundreds of emails to town officials this week over retired Lt. Gen. William “Jerry” Boykin‘s scheduled appearance at the breakfast Thursday.

Boykin, a former senior Pentagon official, bills himself as a warrior for Jesus Christ. He made headlines nationally for describing Muslims as idol-worshipers and comparing the war on terrorism to the biblical fight between Christians and the devil.

Dutch veil ban legislation criticised by government advisory body

Draft legislation aimed at banning burkas in the Netherlands has been heavily criticised by the government’s most important advisory body and needs significant amendments, news agency ANP reports, citing regional newspapers.

The GPD papers, who base their claim on sources in The Hague, say the Council of State delivered its recommendations to the home affairs ministry in November, but the legislation is only due to be sent to parliament this week – eight weeks later.

The Council of State has given the draft law “one of the most critical judgments possible”, ANP says. Estimates of how many women wear a burka in the Netherlands range from a handful to around 100.

Terrorism supporting blog opposes Alternative Leveson Inquiry, wins backing from racist right

Over at the terrorism supporting blog Harry’s Place, “Lucy Lips” (probably David Toube discovering his feminine side) takes exception to the letter in today’s Guardian endorsing the launch of an Alternative Leveson Inquiry that will address the problem of anti-Muslim bigotry in the press.

For Harry’s Place this welcome initiative is to be dismissed as a project of the “Islamist-Far Left Alliance” (is Bianca Jagger part of the Islamist or the far-left component of this alliance, I wonder). Toube and his friends evidently prefer to promote a political line that brings them into an alliance with the far right.

Update:  Jihad Watch reports the Guardian letter under the headline “UK: Islamic supremacists, Leftists demand ‘inquiry into anti-Islam press'”. You do wonder why Harry’s Place and Robert Spencer don’t get on better than they do. They have so much in common.

Bloomberg blasts use of Islamophobic documentary during NYPD training

Third JihadNEW YORK — Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday that New York police used “terrible judgment” in showing officers undergoing counterterrorism training a graphic, hard-hitting film that says Muslim extremists are bent on establishing a worldwide Islamic regime.

Bloomberg said police have stopped showing “The Third Jihad,” a 72-minute documentary-style movie that has been branded inflammatory by some Muslim groups and was bankrolled, according to The New York Times, by a conservative group called the Clarion Fund.

“Somebody exercised some terrible judgment,” Bloomberg said in Albany. “As soon as they found out about it, they stopped it.”

Christian Institute defends women’s rights against sharia threat

The right-wing evangelical Christian Institute has a piece (“Sharia is good for women, claims Muslim lawyer”) attacking Aina Khan, head of the sharia law division at Manchester-based legal firm Russell Jones & Walker. The idea of the CI, which has campaigned vigorously for restrictions on abortion rights, as some sort of feminist pressure group is of course laughable.

The CI quotes Tehmina Kazi of British Muslims for Secular Democracy in support of their position on sharia. Not that this will bother Kazi and BMSD. They happily formed an alliance with right-wing Christian fundamentalist Alan Craig to campaign against the proposed Tablighi Jamaat mosque in Newham.

Investigation concludes that Texas college professor created hostile environment for Muslim students

An internal investigation by Tarrant County College concluded that a former professor created a hostile classroom environment for Muslim students who questioned his source material and complained that his teachings were biased during a November lecture.

Paul Derengowski’s Great Religions of the World class at TCC Southeast Campus grabbed headlines when a Nov. 8 lecture ended with two Muslim students abruptly leaving his class after questioning the professor about his lesson and other students reporting that they felt threatened by what happened. One of the Muslim students, Randa Bedair, e-mailed classmates and accused Derengowski of being biased.

Muslim Canadian Congress honours right-wing immigration minister, calls for extension of veil ban

A Muslim group is urging Canada’s immigration minister to extend his recent burka ban beyond the citizenship courts.

The Muslim Canadian Congress honoured Jason Kenney at a hotel in Toronto’s west end Sunday for his decision to ban burkas during swearing-in ceremonies. But then the group asked the minister to go a step further and introduce legislation requiring any face coverings be removed to work in the public sector or do business with government officials.

Santorum says equality ‘doesn’t come from Islam’ but from ‘God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob’

Rick Santorum2BOILING SPRINGS, SC — At his last town hall before South Carolinians vote, Rick Santorum was discussing the concepts of freedom and equality that the nation was founded on and said the concept of equality “doesn’t come from Islam” or “Eastern religions”. Instead “it comes from “the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob”.
