Shotton Colliery: Muslims fear EDL demo

Shotton Colliery EDL demonstrationWorried Muslims are expected to flee the village they have made their home when far-right extremists stage a protest tomorrow.

Members of the English Defence League (EDL) are due to hold a demonstration in Shotton Colliery tomorrow from 2pm.

The march is in protest at Durham County Council’s approval of local businessman Kaiser Choudry’s plans to turn the former Melrose Arms pub, in the village’s Front Street, into a Muslim education centre.

Mr Choudry’s nephew, Imran Nadeem, 38, who works in the village’s Milco Store, said: “We are very scared. There has been a Muslim presence in Shotton for at least the last 23 years, there are about five or six families, and we have been a very peaceful community. We will be leaving the area for our safety tomorrow and we are worried about our business.”

English Defence League demo a washout

EDL Wandsworth prison protest

The English Defence League had high expectations of their demonstration outside Wandworth prison in support of their jailed leader.

“We want to make it a big event,” the EDL wrote last week, “we want the authorities to sit up and take note. We want them to know that we know that Tommy’s arrest and remand is motivated not by a desire to uphold the law but for political reasons.”

Alas, the troops failed to rally to the cause. Hope Not Hate and EDL News report that a mere 100 protestors turned out in the rain.

EDL thug is candidate in Rotherham by-election

EDL attack Islamic literature stall in Hyde ParkOn Tuesday the EDL’s Yorkshire division announced that an “EDL candidate” would be contesting the Rotherham parliamentary by-election. “Vote for him it’s the way to stop grooming gangs”, they urged.

Some on the extreme right expressed surprise that the candidate (at that point still unnamed) wouldn’t be standing under the banner of the British Freedom party, as EDL co-leader Kevin Carroll is doing in the Bedfordshire police commissioner election. According to one contributor to a British Democracy Forum discussion thread, the candidate had originally wanted to stand for the BFP but it had been “mutually agreed” that it would be “best if he stood as an independent due to a colourful past”.

The meaning of this cryptic remark became clear yesterday when the list of candidates was published. The EDL candidate (who can’t of course stand in the name of the EDL as it is not a registered political party) turns out to be one Clint Bristow.

EDL supporter denies joining attack on Kingston Mosque, says he ‘wanted nothing to do with it’

Henry Hunter with stick

Henry Hunter

A protester photographed holding a stick near Kingston Mosque has claimed he was in “the wrong place at the wrong time”.

Henry Hunter handed himself in to police after being pictured on the front page of the Surrey Comet, following an appeal to find more suspects in the attack on the East Road mosque on November 21, 2010.

At Kingston Crown Court, Mr Hunter denied being part of the group who threw sticks, beer bottles and bacon at the Muslim place of worship, and said he felt scared at what he saw.

He said he was part of the protest march against Muslim extremism that had taken place earlier that day, which concluded peacefully.

But a mob of men targetted the mosque after the march. Mr Hunter admitted going with the group to East Road, but said he broke away when they started throwing objects.
