Channel 4 gives airtime to Anjem Choudary

Anjem-ChoudaryA radical Muslim who led the banned group al-Muhajiroun is to be handed his own programme on Channel 4.

Anjem Choudary, who was also involved with the banned group Islam4UK which planned a protest march through Wootton Bassett, will have free reign to give his views during an edition of the channel’s daily opinion slot, known as 4thought.tv.

Choudary, who has described the 9/11 bombers “magnificent martyrs”, will say in his programme to be broadcast on Dec 5 that British Muslims are “persecuted”.

Channel 4 has already broadcast a film by another radical Muslim, Abu Nusaybah, who supported Choudary’s plan for an Islamist march through Wootton Bassett, the scene of tributes to fallen British soldiers. In it, Nusaybah called for sharia law to be introduced in Britain.

Sunday Telegraph, 28 November 2010

This isn’t the first time that Channel 4 has used Muslims in a cynical attempt to provoke outrage. Four years ago they had the bright idea of persuading a veiled Muslim woman to deliver an “alternative Chistmas message”, to be broadcast in direct opposition to the Queen’s annual Christmas Day message. This stunt played right into the hands of anti-Muslim bigots who want to portray Islam as a hostile and alien ideology. But what did Channel 4 programmers care about that? They’d succeeded in generating controversy and gaining cheap publicity, and assisting the political right in whipping up Islamophobia was a price worth paying. The same irresponsible motives would appear to lie behind the decision to give airtime to unrepresentative nutters like Anjem Choudary and Abu Nusaybah.

We’re doomed – evil Islamists have ‘established a bridgehead in Parliament’

Andrew-Gilligan“After a series of reverses in the political arena, Islamist sympathisers yesterday established a key bridgehead in Parliament.” Yes, it’s Andrew Gilligan – who else? – responding to the launch this week of an All Party Parliamentary Group on Islamophobia.

Gilligan claims that members of the APPG are being “used” by ENGAGE, who he describes as “an organisation of Islamist sympathisers which has consistently defended fundamentalist organisations such as the East London Mosque and the Islamic Forum of Europe”. By that reasoning, of course, London Assembly member Andrew Boff qualifies as a fundamentalist sympathiser. And, in view of his friendly relations with the East London Mosque, Boris Johnson probably does too.

Gilligan complains that ENGAGE not only defended the East London Mosque against his hysterical witch-hunting, but it also opposed the Home Office’s ban on Zakir Naik entering the UK, failed to endorse Gilligan’s criticisms of an iERA report on Islamophobia and defended Caroline Spelman, the Environment Secretary, against Yasmin Alibhai-Brown’s attack on her support for the right to wear the face-veil.

If Gilligan wants to convince anyone that ENGAGE are a gang of dangerous Islamist extremists intent on subverting the mother of parliaments he’ll have to come up with something more damning than that. Unfortunately, given Gilligan’s long record of inventing fraudulent accusations against those he wants to discredit, he probably will.

Will HP dig deep for Mad Mel?

Taking_the_airbrush_to_evil

In his Diary column in the Independent earlier this week Matthew Norman outlined the background to Mohammad Sawalha’s successful libel action against the Spectator and Melanie Phillips:

In July 2008, Mad Mel lifted and embellished a mistake from the neocon website, Harry’s Place, regarding Mohammad Sawalha, a Palestinian-born British man whom Al Jazeera had mis-transcribed referring to “evil/noxious” Jews at a rally. In fact, as Arabic experts later confirmed to High Court superstar Tugendhat, he referred to the “Jewish lobby”. Al Jazeera corrected it instantly, and Harry’s Place later, yet MM magisterially ignored requests for a simple correction until a trial was imminent, when she caved. This unwonted arrogance has presented a six-figure bill for damages and costs to The Spectator, which at the time of writing continues to host her deliciously deranged blog.

Given their responsibility for getting Mel and the Speccie into this mess, it would seem only reasonable that Harry’s Place should make a substantial contribution to the payment of Mohammad Sawalha’s costs and damages. Can we take it that the chaps will be organising a whip-round?

‘Christmas is hijacked by Muslims and Hindus’ claims Daily Star

Rochdale lights

Barmy PC do-gooders have put up their town’s Christmas lights along with displays for Muslim and Hindu festivals – even though those celebrations have already finished. Councillors were so anxious not to offend other faiths that they decided to share the Christian display with lights to mark the other celebrations. But residents have slammed the move because although the lights were switched on last night, the Muslim festival of Eid ends today and Sikhs and Hindus celebrated Diwali two weeks ago.

One angry father told the Daily Star: “It’s like Christmas is being hijacked. It’s mad. Why do we have these lights up for Eid and Diwali when they’ve finished? We wouldn’t go around putting Santas up on any of these festivals.” But council bosses in Rochdale say they want to keep the lights to “represent the community”. Another resident said: “The lights look fantastic … but I don’t see why they have to have all these other festivals in them.”

Philip Davies, Tory MP for Shipley, West Yorks, said: “I’ve no idea why local authorities up and down the country are so ashamed of celebrating Christmas. All this kind of pussyfooting around is done in the name of not offending other people from other faiths. But it tends to be done by white middle-class people with some kind of bizarre guilt complex.”

Daily Star, 19 November 2010

You’ll see that the “Happy Eid” illuminations are less prominently displayed than the main “Happy Christmas” message, and that Stars of David have rightly been included too as a mark of respect to the Jewish community. Of course, even the Daily Star balks at running an article headlined “Christmas is hijacked by Jews”. But Muslims and Hindus are regarded as legitimate targets by racist tabloids.

Islam is being ‘demonised’ says former Met Police Commissioner

Lord BlairIslam is being “demonised” as a result of atrocities carried out in the name of a “distorted” version of the faith, former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lord Blair of Boughton has said.

The ex-commissioner, who led the Met during the 2005 suicide bombings on London’s transport system, described Islam as one of the “great” Abrahamic faiths and a “faith of peace” which had suffered as a result of atrocities carried out by individuals.

Press Association, 16 November 2010

Back in 2005 Ian Blair won the IHRC’s “Islamophobe of the Year” award, presumably on the basis of the stick he received over the Menezes killing. This struck me at the time as grossly unfair. Whatever criticisms you might make of Blair, he was never an Islamophobe. On the contrary, he always had a good line on supporting multiculturalism and diversity, and countering anti-Muslim bigotry in the police force – for which he was denounced by the likes of the Daily Mail, Melanie Phillips and the BNP.

Shameful suppression of democratic rights in Muslim-majority country – no word from Harry’s Place yet

Egyptian police have rounded up about 600 Muslim Brotherhood members ahead of this month’s parliamentary election and some 250 are still detained, a senior Brotherhood official said on Tuesday.

Mohammed Mursi told AFP that the crackdown on members of the opposition Islamist group began when the Brotherhood announced on October 9 plans to field candidates for the November 28 legislative polls.

“Arrests are still being made. Someone goes out to campaign, he gets harassed and arrested and then released in a few days,” said Mursi, a member of the Brotherhood’s politburo who heads the group’s election campaign. “About 600 have been arrested since we announced that we would run in the election. About 250 remain in jail.”

You might have thought that sites like Harry’s Place, who were so vocal in defending the political opposition in Iran against state repression, would take a clear stand in defence of the democratic rights of the opposition in Egypt. But so far not a peep.

Could it be that Harry’s Place believes that democratic rights don’t extend to members and supporters of Islamist political parties? Given HP’s obsessive campaign to drive Islamists out of public life in the UK, that would seem to be a reasonable conclusion to draw.

Gilligan continues to smear North London Central Mosque

Over at his Telegraph blog, Andrew Gilligan responds to Bob Lambert’s recent Al-Jazeera article.

Gilligan sneers at the role of the Metropolitan Police’s Muslim Contact Unit in helping to oust Abu Hamza al-Masri from the North London Central Mosque in Finsbury Park, claiming that one gang of terrorist sympathisers was merely replaced by the present management which itself has “close links with another designated terrorist organisation, Hamas”.

NLCM can answer for themselves about the nature of their supposed “close links” with Hamas. But it is worth pointing out that Hamas is in fact a political party with mass support – it won a majority on the Palestinian Legislative Council through democratic elections in 2006, with 44% of the vote – and is not a proscribed terrorist group in the UK. It is the Izz al-Din al-Qassem Brigades that is proscribed. But when has Gilligan ever been interested in accurate reporting?

Gilligan also provides a link to his earlier piece attempting to associate NLCM with Anwar al-Awlaki and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. Given that this allegation has been shown to be nonsense, you might have thought an apology to NLCM from Gilligan would be in order. But the day when Gilligan admits he was wrong, even after his misreporting has been thoroughly exposed, is yet to dawn.

Spiegel interview with Wilders

Wilders in New York 2Geert Wilders’ interview with Der Spiegel, in which he accused Angela Merkel of “copying” his own anti-Islam rhetoric, has already attracted attention. Spiegel Online has now published an English translation of the interview. On the subject of Merkel’s attack on multiculturalism, Wilders states:

“My party and I are a threat to the political elite in many countries. But they will not stop us. Take a look at German Chancellor Angela Merkel who is now trying to create a copy….

“Merkel is afraid – because there are opinion polls which show that a charismatic figure, if one were to emerge in Germany as I have done in the Netherlands, could count on 20 percent of the vote. I mean a figure without a far right-wing background – in other words, not from the Republikaner (REP) or the National Democratic Party (NPD). This represents a threat to the mainstream political parties, which is why they are now trying to copy us: Merkel has declared that the multicultural society has failed….

“I have never heard her say before that the multicultural society has failed. And the majority of Germans reject the statement by German President Christian Wulff that Islam is part of Germany. This means that what we have already witnessed here in Holland is now occurring in your country as well – the political elite is in turmoil…. The head of Germany’s conservative Christian Social Union (CSU), Horst Seehofer, not only says that the multicultural society is dead, but also that he wants no more Turkish and Arab immigrants.”

Does Mr Justice Cooke think Islam is a religion of hate?

Sentencing Roshonara Choudhry after her conviction for the attempted murder of Stephen Timms MP, Mr Justice Cooke told her: “You said you wanted to die because you wanted to be a martyr and that it was Islamic teaching that to fight and die for your religion is the highest honour. You said that you thought you had fulfilled your obligation and your Islamic duties to stand up for the people of Iraq and to punish someone who wanted to make war with them.”

Cooke observed of Timms: “I understand that he brings to bear his own faith, which upholds very different values to those which appear to have driven this defendant. Those values are those upon which the common law of this country was founded and include respect and love for one’s neighbour, for the foreigner in the land, and for those who consider themselves enemies, all as part of one’s love of God. These values were the basis of our system of law and justice and I trust that they will remain so as well as motivating those, like Mr Timms, who hold public office.”

If Cooke was saying that Timms’ interpretation of his faith led him to do good, whereas Choudhry’s interpretation of hers led her to an act of attempted murder, that would be fair enough (allowing for the fact that a judge is hardly likely to view a vote for the Iraq war as an act of evil). All faiths are open to conflicting interpretations. But Cooke’s words could also be taken as arguing that Christianity is a religion of love and peace whereas Islam is a religion that inspires violence. Trying to be charitable, I initially concluded that his statements were ambiguous.

However, Tom Leonard draws our attention to the fact that Mr Justice Cooke is a prominent figure in the Lawyers’ Christian Fellowship, a right-wing evangelical organisation with a record of promoting anti-Muslim bigotry.

For example, the LCF joined with other fundamentalist Christian groups in whipping up hysteria over the plan to build a so-called “mega-mosque” in Newham. The LCF website published a letter to MPs and peers by Christian Concern For Our Nation headed “Terrorist links for Olympics mosque?”, and in the aftermath of the attempted 2007 car bombings in London and Glasgow the LCF reproduced a press release by Alan Craig of the Christian People’s Alliance accusing Tablighi Jamaat of inspiring the attacks.

In 2008 the LCF’s then public policy director Andrea Minichiello Williams hosted a conference called Understanding Islam, where the featured speaker was one Sam Solomon, who told his audience: “The Christian faith, it is all about love…. What is Islam based on? It’s based on this one word: Hate.” Solomon added: “The closer you get in Islam to the Koran and to the Islamic sources the more radical you become and the more hateful a personality you develop.” Solomon claimed that Muslims “are brainwashed, they are indoctrinated in accepting that we are the enemies and we must be liquidated and eradicated”. (See video here here from 2:30.)

This certainly sheds some light on the thinking behind Cooke’s comments, doesn’t it? That a man with close links to Christian fundamentalism should have been allowed to preside over such a sensitive case as Choudhry’s is unbelievable, and it is even more unacceptable that he should use the trial as a platform to promote his own religious views.

‘Muslims tell British: go to hell’

Muslims tell British go to hellThus the front-page headline in the Daily Express.

By “Muslims” the Express means Anjem Choudary’s minuscule extremist sect, and by “British” it means “non-Muslims” – or perhaps, more narrowly, “white people”.

For comment on right-wing press coverage of the Roshonara Choudhry case, see ENGAGE, Tabloid Watch and Five Chinese Crackers.

Update:  See also “SPECIAL REPORT: The ‘DIY jihadists’ paid for by us… Roshonara Choudhry supporters are living on benefits”, Daily Mail, 5 November 2010

The report has produced the intended reaction, judging by the comments that follow it:

“Cultural enrichment … don’t you feel so much better for it ??”

“The bleeding heart liberals are the cause of all this.”

“Only in Britain could this madness happen, where we are funding the source of our own destruction.”

“Perhaps this low life should get his benefits stopped for deceiving the authorities. Won’t happen of course, can’t be seen to be upsetting the non-integrating squallor-living supporters of terrorism”

“Well done Labour you most be so proud of your Multiculturalism.”

“And YOU who keep voting for the Lib/Lab/Con are to blame! – Joe Bloggs, In the hell that was once England”

“where are all the other ‘Moderate’ muslims (If there is such a thing) who we never hear speaking out against these anti-british lunatics?”

“Welcome to Islamic Britain. Land of the FREE. Well FREE Benefit anyway.”

“This is typical of modern Britain. We invite the dregs of the world to our shores, those that want to murder the citizens of this nation and we pander to their every whim. We house them, feed them but still we invite more and more….”

“If Islam is so fantastic they should take the first flight to the nearest Islamic Republic. Enough of appeasing these people.”

“In a strange sort of way, these people should be admired. Why? Because they stick rigidly to their beliefs. Unlike the Judge and Police, who through fear bend over backwards to please them. And that’s why the battle is already lost. So we must all get used to a future Islamic Britain.”

“These vile scum SHOULD have been arrested and brought to trial for their stinking little antics …….IF IT WERE WHITE ANGLO SAXONS RANTING IN THIS WAY YOU CAN BE SURE THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE CASE !!!!!!!”

“Sick people? sick religion yet they take money from us all.”
