French MP warns against Islamisation of Europe

Libération interviews Lionnel Luca, a member of the right-wing anti-migrant parliamentary group Droite populaire.

Luca states that the continent of Europe is on the way towards demographic extinction as a result of immigration and he poses the question: “in 2050 or 2010 will Europe still be a democracy with the values of secularism, of respect for women’s rights?” He asserts: “For twenty years a fundamentalist conquering Islamism has tried to impose its way of life on us.” And although “France is resisting, with the ban on the headscarf in schools, on the veil”, other countries are unfortunately less vigorous in their defence of European civilisation.

Asked if this isn’t a catastrophist vision, Luca goes on to claim that two-thirds of the meat in France is ritually slaughtered (an editorial comment notes that the official figure is 14%) and says that he objects to “paying a tax for a religion that is not mine”. He concludes: “The word ‘Islamisation’ seems too strong to you? I am inclined to say to you: let’s talk about this in twenty years when you will be wearing a veil.”

We Are Waltham Forest to hold two events in Walthamstow town square to counteract EDL march

Campaigners are due to hold two events to protest against a march organised by the English Defence League (EDL).

The far right extremist group was due to hold a demonstration in Walthamstow on Saturday, August 18, but has now postponed it until Saturday, September 1.

Umbrella campaign group We Are Waltham Forest has reacted by opting to hold two demonstrations in Walthamstow town square on both dates.

A spokesman for the group said: “We have to ensure both dates are well covered, so we need people to be understanding and to turn up in large numbers to show the EDL that we don’t want them or their politics in our borough.”

Both its town square demos will begin from 11am.

Settler teen arrested for West Bank mosque arson

Judea and Samaria district police on Sunday arrested a 17-year-old settler they suspect took part in the “price tag” arson attack on a mosque in Jab’a, south of Ramallah, on June 19.

The boy was arrested at Lake Kinneret (the Sea of Galilee) where he was vacationing with his family.

Police detained two other youths last month in connection to the crime. Both were released due to insufficient evidence.

The arsonists at the Jab’a mosque spray-painted the words “Ulpana War” on a wall of the mosque, a reference to the contested outpost next to Beit El. The reference to Beit El led police to view the incident as a price-tag attack, the name given to acts of violence or vandalism committed to protest Israeli government actions against settlements.

Last night’s protest on Thurnby Lodge estate – spot the fascist

A series of late-night protests have been staged against a faith group’s plan to convert a disused Scout hut in Leicester into a community centre.

Dozens of police have been stationed in Thurnby Lodge estate for the past few nights to oversee the peaceful demonstrations, which at their height have attracted up to 150 people.

Residents said they were angry the former Scout hut in Nursery Road looked likely to become a community centre operated by Islamic charity the As-Salaam Trust. They would like the building, which has been empty for several years, to be developed for the wider community.
