Protester who tore up Qur’an has case dropped at Leicester court

A man who was put on trial after staging an anti-religion protest by ripping out pages from the Koran in front of Muslims has had the case against him dropped.

A jury at Leicester Crown Court failed to reach a verdict in the case against Peter James Crawford last month. The Crown Prosecution Service reviewed the evidence and a decision was made not to continue with a fresh trial. The case was dropped against Mr Crawford, 52, when the prosecution offered no evidence against him at a hearing.

Speaking this week, Mr Crawford’s defence advocate during the trial, Steven Newcombe, said: “I think the prosecution made a sensible decision not to have a retrial in the light of the jury being deadlocked. There were other ways of dealing with this matter, rather than attempting to prosecute Mr Crawford in a crown court. He has learned a lesson and I’m sure he will conduct himself with a greater degree of sensitivity.”

A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said: “When jury cannot decide on a verdict, the prosecution must decide whether to seek a retrial on the basis of the same evidence. A number of factors must be taken into account, including the likely penalty if the defendant is found guilty, the time delay in securing a date for the retrial, the views of the victim, judiciary and police and the likelihood of another jury reaching a decision.”

Former BNP member sets up new rival far right political party

Andrew Emerson

A mental health nurse has set up a new far right political party. Dr Andrew Emerson has joined other former BNP members to create Patria, which means homeland in Latin, which calls for Britain to withdraw from the EU, to repeal the Human Rights Act, to end all immigration and to repatriate non-British residents.

The group – which includes Ian Johnson from the New Forest who stood as a BNP candidate for Havant in the 2005 – will be fielding candidates in local and general elections. They left the far right BNP after becoming disillusioned with the way it was run.

Geller and Spencer OK with passport fraud

Stephen Lennon at SION conference
Illegal immigrant Stephen Lennon speaking at Geller and Spencer’s New York conference

Over at Bartholomew’s Notes on Religion, Richard Bartholomew examines the responses by Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer to the conviction of English Defence League leader Stephen Lennon on a charge of passport fraud.

It seems that these self-styled defenders of the western legal system against the supposed encroachments of Sharia law can’t even bring themselves to condemn the commission of this serious criminal offence by the man they have hailed as the leader of the British counterjihadist movement.

In addition, of course, Geller and Spencer still haven’t provided us with an explanation of how Lennon could have arrived in New York on a false passport them knowing. Until they do so, the suspicion will remain that they actively co-operated with him in securing his illegal entry to the US so he could attend their conference.

Which, if I understand US law correctly, is a criminal offence there too.

EDL’s Thanet division leader convicted of assault

Gary MilsomHope Not Hate reports that the leader of the English Defence League’s Thanet division, Gary Milsom, has been fined £150 and sentenced to 120 hours community service after being found guilty of common assault and resisting a police officer.

Milsom, operating under the witty pseudonym “Pat Riot”, organised the harassment of worshippers at a mosque in his home town of Margate last September. At the time, Milsom assured the Isle of Thanet Gazette that the EDL was not racist and was committed to peaceful action.

The fraudulent character of Milsom’s claim to oppose racism was exposed by a Gazette reporter who attended an EDL meeting in Margate at which “dirty Pakis” were denounced along with “dirty Muslims”. Milsom’s recent conviction now also demolishes his supposed commitment to non-violence.

EDL Solihull demo organiser charged with racist bus attack

A senior member of the English Defence League’s Birmingham Division has been charged with a racist attack on a bus in the Cattell Road area of the city.

The attack, which took place in October last year, resulted in a 35-year-old man being repeatedly punched in the face and ribs after trying to stop two men who were racially abusing another passenger on the number 60 bus.

The driver of the bus then intervened and the men left.

After the attack, PC Paul Davey, of the Birmingham Investigation Team, said: “This was a shocking racist attack against a man who was trying to protect a fellow passenger.”

Sutton Coldfield based EDL member Matty P runs the Birmingham Division’s blog and is organising a demo in Solihull on the 13th January.

Far-right Facebook abuse of Newcastle councillor

Dipu AhadA councillor claims to be the victim of an online attack from far right extremists after he spoke out about the rape of a schoolgirl.

Newcastle City councillor Dipu Ahad called for calm when violence flared in the city’s West as police named 19-year-old Abdul Zalal Miah as the man charged with raping a 15-year-old girl. The same day his Facebook page was inundated with a barrage of malicious comments from members of far right extremist groups condemning his actions.

Coun Ahad, 29, said: “I called for calm on Christmas Eve because tension was mounting and we were worried more incidents would happen. Thankfully we worked hard and the police increased their controls so nothing escalated but I have had a lot of malicious messages personally. Some have become nasty and malicious and say they are going to protest outside my house. These people are using this incident to stir things up.”

Manchester on alert for unrest as English Defence League plans huge demo

Well, that’s the headline to an article in the Manchester Evening News reporting on the English Defence League’s plans to hold a “huge rally” in the city on 2 March (under the slogan “IF YOU LOVE THIS COUNTRY AND HATE ISLAM JOIN US IN MANCHESTER”).

Given that the EDL these days has difficulty mobilising more than a few hundred of its supporters to turn out for demonstrations, “huge” will almost certainly prove to be a gross exaggeration.

Thurnby Lodge Islamic centre plan rejected, campaign group with far-right links given control of disputed building

EDL member Chris Hopewell presents Forgotten Estates petition to Leicester mayor Peter Soulsby

The future of a disused scout hut was decided today with a Muslim community group, which wanted to take it on, being told it can have another building.

The scout hut, in Nursery Road, Thurnby Lodge, Leicester, will be handed to residents who have protested against the As-Salaam Trust’s plan for the building since last summer.

The protesters, who have formed their own group called the Forgotten Estates Committee, will be given the lease on the scout hut for two-and-a-half years. They have told Leicester City Council they will develop it as a community centre.

The As-Salaam Trust has been told it can have the lease to the Raven Centre, which is next to the Thurnby Lodge Community Centre where it has been meeting for prayers for the past three years.

Sir Peter made the announcement after meeting both groups this afternoon.

BNP thanked for highlighting Skegness abattoir as trade pours in

BNP Skegness anti-halal campaignManagement of a halal abattoir say they wish to thank a BNP leader for the attention brought by their party, as meat orders are on the up worldwide.

The slaughter house, based in Heath Road, Skegness, has roused mixed opinions among the community but business has improved thanks to details about its opening being posted on many websites across the internet.

Mr Patel, part management of Premier Halal Ltd, who did not wish to give his first name, said the site had been open about a month and it was trading, with local staff from the area employed.

“I want to thank Nick Griffin, the abattoir has been advertised on lots of meat websites and this has improved business. We have had meat orders from Poland and Germany,” said Mr Patel.

He made the remarks after the British National Party announced plans for another day of action over the issue.
