Baroness Cox claims Sun misrepresented her views on sharia law

Baroness Cox with David HorowitzRichard Bartholomew draws our attention to the interesting news that the Sun and Daily Mail have withdrawn their reports of Baroness Cox’s speech at the Christian Broadcasting Council symposium at the House of Lords earlier this week, in which she warned of the threat from sharia law in the UK.

An email from Cox replying to a complaint about her reported statements on sharia has been posted on Expose. It reads: “Thank you for your email of yesterday, raising your concern over the words printed in the Sun newspaper (21 March) which were attributed to me. I emphasise that I did not make the remark and the Sun has apologised to me personally and I hope will publish a correction.”

More on Baroness Cox and the threat of sharia law

CBC House of Lords Symposium

It turns out that the meeting at the House of Lords on Monday where Baroness Cox made her hysterical claims about the threat of sharia law was the annual symposium of the Christian Broadcasting Council, of which Cox is vice-president. It was titled “Islamist Resurgence: Shari’a and freedom” and Cox was billed as speaking “on matters arising out of her Private Members Bill on Gender Equality and Shari’a”.

‘Alert over dangers of Sharia’: Sun promotes Geert Wilders admirer Baroness Cox

Baroness Cox hosts Geert Wilders at the House of Lords in March 2010

Stoning, whipping and amputations could become common punishments in the UK if hardline Sharia law is allowed to thrive, a peer has warned.

Crossbencher Baroness Cox claimed a rise in the number of British Muslims using it instead of the official court system could even lead to the destruction of democracy.

She said Sharia law will become a way of life in parts of the UK, sparking support for the BNP, unless officials step in.

UK Muslims have been able to use Sharia for legal disputes since 1982.

The baroness said: “We do not at the moment have the most brutal punishments, but there are those who would like to bring them in.”

Wilders’ anti-Islam party is bankrolled by US supporters, says former MP

Geert Wilders and David Horowitz Freedom CenterAmerican lobbyists make large donations to a foundation set up by the anti-immigration PVV, Hero Brinkman, the MP who left the party on Tuesday, told a television talk show on Tuesday evening.

Brinkman said he could not rule out the money being used to pay for Geert Wilders’ defence on racial hatred charges but declined to comment further on what the money had been spent on. Nor would he comment on the size of the donations.

The PVV is thought to generate significant funding from Israeli and far-right supporters in the US.

Because the PVV has no members, it does not receive government subsidies to run the campaigning side of its operations and relies instead on donations.

Dutch News, 21 March 2012

Brinkman’s allegation about the PVV’s finances confirms what had already been revealed in the Dutch press. In 2010 Volkskrant and NRC reported that the two main US sources for Wilders’ funding were David Horowitz and Daniel Pipes.

Croydon: Tory councillors vote down Islamic Centre plans after Gavin Boby is allowed to give evidence

Law and Freedom Foundation logoTory councillors have been branded “perverse” after rejecting plans for an Islamic Centre in Purley. The six voted against the proposal despite planning officers recommending the development be approved.

And questions have also been raised as to why committee chairman councillor David Osland allowed “Mosquebuster” Gavin Boby to address the chamber, despite knowing of his links to the far-right English Defence League.

Councillors further clashed at the meeting – policed by around eight Met officers – which ended in plans for an Islamic place of worship coupled with multi-faith community facilities defeated by an all-Conservative six votes to an all-Labour five.

‘Ken Livingstone: I will make London a beacon of Islam’ (it says here)

Ken Livingstone has promised to turn London into a “beacon” for the words of the Prophet Mohammed in a sermon at one of the capital’s most controversial mosques.

Mr Livingstone, Labour’s candidate for mayor of London, pledged to “educate the mass of Londoners” in Islam, saying:  “That will help to cement our city as a beacon that demonstrates the meaning of the words of the Prophet.” Mr Livingstone described Mohammed’s words in his last sermon as “an agenda for all humanity.”

He praised the Prophet’s last sermon, telling his audience: “I want to spend the next four years making sure that every non-Muslim in London knows and understands [its] words and message.” He also promised to “make your life a bit easier financially.”

Mr Livingstone was speaking at last Friday’s Jummah prayer at the North London Central Mosque, also known as Finsbury Park Mosque, formerly controlled by the terrorist recruiter Abu Hamza.

Hamza was removed in 2003 but the mosque is now controlled by an Islamist organisation, the Muslim Association of Britain, which has been linked to the banned terror group, Hamas.

It is a blunt assault on multi-culturalism seen through the prism of his experience of immigration in the town of Dewsbury in West Yorkshire. Lockwood refers to his book as a “hard-hitting chronicle of the massive social changes in the district” and what he describes as “20 years of failed multi-culturalism.”

Do young British Muslims support ‘honour’ violence?

Daily Mail honour violence

Here is a classic piece of Islamophobic reporting by the Daily Mail, featuring the paper’s usual contempt for factual accuracy when it comes to coverage of the Muslim community.

Headlined “More than two thirds of young British Muslims believe ‘honour’ violence is acceptable, survey reveals”, the article begins: “Most young British Muslims support violence against women who ‘dishonour’ their families, a Panorama investigation will claim today.”
