Islamic school forced to shut over far-right safety fears as Dispatches documentary is accused of providing ‘fodder for the EDL’

Darul Uloom Islamic High School

An Islamic school at the centre of a documentary row will close tomorrow amid safety fears. Teachers at the Darul Uloom Islamic High School, in Small Heath, Birmingham, have held meetings with police chiefs and fear that youngsters could be targeted by the far-Right.

The Dispatches documentary, Lessons in Hatred and Violence, aired tonight and showed footage of a preacher making offensive remarks about Hindus and ranting: “Disbelievers are the worst creatures”.

But teachers at the school insist the undercover reporter captured an isolated incident where a 17-year-old senior student was talking to pupils. They have provided a letter which shows that he was expelled for his views last August – five months before the school was made aware of the tapes by producers.

A Birmingham faith leader has now backed the school’s record of teaching tolerance and MP John Hemming said he believed the documentary was irresponsible and had put schoolchildren at risk.

The school’s head of curriculum Mujahid Aziz said the decision had been to bring forward the school’s half-term by a week after meetings with police. Pupils were being told not to return to classes until the start of March.

“They filmed for six months and managed to collect a handful of comments which promote intolerance,” said Mr Aziz. “We were aware of the views of this 17-year-old student and we dealt with him by exclusion straight away – before we even knew that we were being filmed. What people will see in that clip is completely contrary to what we teach at the school about harmony and awareness of different faiths.

“Our concern now is for the safety of children and people coming to the mosque because we are worried that some people will get completely the wrong impression once they have watched this programme. After meeting with the police, we are bringing the half-term forward and we have been advised that there should be plenty of staff around on Monday night as a precaution.”

Birmingham MP John Hemming (Lib Dem, Yardley) said Channel 4’s portrayal of the school was irresponsible.

“If Channel 4 thinks this is a school where racism and intolerance is accepted in any way, they have got their facts seriously wrong,” he said. “They have already had hate mail and now they are having to close for the safety of their pupils. This kind of documentary is ideal fodder for the EDL. Channel 4 is putting the safety of children at risk by criticising a school which is doing its job properly.”

Mr Hemming was backed by Yann Lovelock, a Buddhist who sits on the executive board of Birmingham Interfaith Council. He said: “They have gone out of their way to make other faiths feel welcome and I have been invited to the school several times to speak to pupils about Buddhism. As far as I can see, they do everything they can to promote tolerance and understanding and I am happy to work with them.”

Twenty percent rise in racist incidents in Scotland

Increased levels of Islamophobia and negative attitudes towards Polish people could be behind a 20% rise in racist incidents in Scotland, experts have said.

Every day in Scotland, 17 people are abused, threatened or violently attacked because of the colour of their skin, ethnicity or nationality. Statistics showed that 6171 incidents of racism were recorded in 2009/10 – a rise of 20.4% from the 5123 racist incidents recorded in 2008/9.

The figures, revealed in a freedom of information request to Scotland’s eight police forces, come despite there only being a 13% increase over the previous five years. Part of the rise is thought to be down to an increase in anti-Polish attacks, with the Federation of Poles in Great Britain saying there has been an annual 20% rise in racist incidents.

Alastair McIntosh, fellow at the Centre of Human Ecology and a co-author of studies into racism in Scotland, said Islamophobia is also a problem in Scotland. He said:

“Whenever you have the fear of poverty, people tend to become xenophobic, and I think that’s an increasing issue in Scotland with the economic problems we’ve had recently. Muslims in particular are having a hard time of it, and they all seem to get tarred with the same brush. It would be true to say Islamophobia is a problem in this country.”

According to figures released in 2010, race hate victims were most likely to be of Pakistani origin, with 48% of all those targeted classed as Asian, followed by white British. The majority of victims – 76% – were men and the vast majority of race hate perpetrators – 96% – were classed as white British. Of these, most were men aged 16-20, followed by men under the age of 16.

Strathclyde Police reported the highest number of incidents with 2826, while Lothian and Borders Police dealt with 1494 incidents. The lowest recorded total was in Dumfries and Galloway, where police dealt with 70 racist incidents.

Florida man stabbed because he was Muslim

Bradley StrottST. PETERSBURG — Authorities have arrested a 52-year-old man they say committed a hate crime against a man he learned was a Muslim.

According to an arrest affidavit, Bradley Kent Strott, of 4300 58th Ave. N, stabbed the unidentified victim in the neck with a pocket knife on Friday evening.

The two men had been talking about religion when the victim told Strott he was a Muslim, the report said.

“The defendant then became upset, grabbed the victim by his shirt, and stabbed him in the neck with his pocket knife,” a Pinellas County sheriff’s deputy wrote in the affidavit. “The defendant stated that Muslims are the root of the problem,”

The victim required medical treatment, the report said, but his condition was unknown Saturday.

Strott was arrested on a charge of aggravated battery and booked into the Pinellas County Jail late Friday night.

Homes attacked in Luton after racist EDL march

Luton home attacked by EDL

Two homes in Luton were attacked late last night – their windows smashed and the word EDL painted on the front door – just hours after the English Defence League’s racist protest through Luton town centre. The houses are on the edge of Bury Park – where many Asian people live.

Mr Iqbal lives with his mother, brother and sister in one of the houses. He told Socialist Worker, “It happened at around 11.40pm. I was awake but about to go to sleep. I heard a crash and ran to the front of the house to find a brick had been thrown through a window. When I opened the front door, I saw someone had painted EDL on it. I couldn’t sleep – I thought they may come back.”

EDL descends on Luton

EDL protestor Luton February 2011Thousands of far-right activists from the English Defence League descended on Luton yesterday for the biggest demonstration in the organisation’s 20-month history.

Coachloads of supporters from the group’s UK-wide “divisions” arrived from 10am and were joined by far right and Islamophobic groups from across Europe.

The EDL and police had predicted a turnout of between 5,000 and 7,000, but as the marchers arrived in St George’s Square in the town centre just after 1pm, it appeared that no more than 3,000 had turned out. Despite the smaller numbers there were minor scuffles at the train station as anti-racist protesters tried to prevent EDL supporters getting off trains.

More than 2,000 police officers from forces across the south of England escorted the EDL march from the station into the centre of Luton. Some fireworks and bottles were thrown, shops and businesses in the town were closed and petrol stations had been boarded up in what one resident compared to a “war zone”.

EDL leader Stephen Lennon, told the crowd they were part of a “tidal wave of patriotism” sweeping the UK. He launched a broad attack on Islam and the UK’s Muslim communities and said mainstream politicians were failing the working class.
