Pew poll finds continuing divide in Americans’ views of Islam and violence

Pew logo

The public remains divided over whether Islam is more likely than other religions to encourage violence among its believers. Currently, 40% say the Islamic religion is more likely than others to encourage violence while 42% say it is not. These opinions have changed little in recent years. But in March 2002, just 25% saw Islam as more likely to encourage violence while twice as many (51%) disagreed.

The national survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, conducted Feb. 22-March 1 among 1,504 adults, finds that most young people reject the idea that Islam is more likely than other religions to promote violence. Nearly six-in-ten (58%) of those younger than 30 say Islam does not encourage violence more than other religions; 31% say it does. By contrast, a plurality of those 50 and older (45%) say Islam is more likely to encourage violence.

Political and ideological divisions are even wider: By roughly three-to-one (66% to 21%), conservative Republicans say Islam encourages violence more than other religions. Moderate and liberal Republicans are divided – 46% say Islam is more likely to encourage violence, 47% say it is not. By more than two-to-one (61% to 29%), liberal Democrats say that Islam is not more likely than other religions to promote violence. Conservative and moderate Democrats, by a smaller margin (48% to 31%), agree.

Fully 67% of those who agree with the Tea Party movement say Islam is more associated with violence than other religions. Among those who disagree with the Tea Party, the balance of opinion is nearly reversed – 62% say Islam is no more likely than other religions to promote violence while 24% say it is. Among the large share of the public that offers no opinion of the Tea Party, 38% say Islam is more likely to promote violence while about the same number (41%) disagrees.

A clear majority of white evangelical Protestants (60%) say that Islam is more likely to encourage violence than are other religions. Far fewer white mainline Protestants (42%) and white Catholics (39%) express this view. And by nearly two-to-one (56% to 30%), the religiously unaffiliated say that the Islamic religion does not encourage violence more than others.

California man charged with firebombing reproductive health clinic also vandalised Islamic centre

A Chowchilla school bus driver has been charged with firebombing a Planned Parenthood office here last September, and authorities said Thursday he also is responsible for vandalism and menacing signs left at the city’s Islamic center.

Donny Eugene Mower, 37, of Madera, was arrested Wednesday on federal charges of attacking a reproductive health clinic. If convicted, he faces a minimum of five years in prison.

The September firebombing came several weeks after someone threw a brick at the Madera Islamic Center and left signs there, including one that read, “Wake up America, the enemy is here.”

An entity calling itself the “American Nationalist Brotherhood” took credit for both incidents, but U.S. Attorney Ben Wagner said Mower is its only member.

Failure to prosecute Guramit Singh smacks of double standards, Sikhs say

Sikhs Against EDL

Members of the British Sikh community say they are disappointed that Guramit Singh, one of the self-styled leaders of the English Defence League (EDL), will now not face charges on suspicion of causing religiously aggravated harassment, alarm or distress.

His arrest related to the speech that he made at the EDL protest in Peterborough. The video of his speech is freely available on the internet.

The police decision not to proceed further with his case comes only days after the uproar in the media when Emadur Choudhury, an Islamist extremist, was fined only £50 after burning poppies during Remembrance Day last year.

Balwinder Singh Rana from Sikhs Against the EDL said, “This smacks of ‘double standards’. While the media was right to protest against the lenient treatment given to Choudhury for causing an offence to the memory of the fallen soldiers, I think now they should show the same vigour in demanding that Singh should not be allowed to get away for insulting a whole community.

“Guramit Singh, by fronting the EDL, has only brought shame and embarrassment to the Sikh community, but most of the community is united in condemning his actions.”

Varinder Singh, organiser of the Sikhs Against the EDL, said, “At the Luton demonstration against the EDL there was a very strong message sent from the Sikh community that he (Guramit Singh) is an embarrassment. I feel immensely proud seeing the Sikh community unite against the EDL and hold individuals such as Guramit accountable for their actions.”

Sarkozy sacks diversity adviser for calling on Muslims to reject UMP

Abderrahmane Dahmane and SarkozyFrench President Nicolas Sarkozy has sacked his diversity adviser after he called on Muslims not to support the governing UMP party, reports say.

Abderrahmane Dahmane, a Muslim and former UMP official appointed to his post only in January, was protesting against a planned debate on Islam.

He said Muslim members of the UMP should not renew their party membership unless the debate was cancelled. He condemned UMP leader Jean-Francois Cope as a “plague for Muslims”.

The UMP (Union for a Popular Movement) is planning to hold a public debate on 5 April on “Islam and secularism”. The debate will explore firstly how “the practice of religions may be compatible with the rules of the secular republic”, and secondly “the question of Islam in France”.

Speaking on Thursday, Mr Dahmane compared the situation of French Muslims to that of Jews during World War II and said the debate had been planned by a “handful of neo-Nazis”.

Former Shotton Lane Social Club demolished after arson attack

The charred remains of the old Shotton Lane Social Club building has now been demolished – one month after it was torched by arsonists.

The community building had been earmarked to become an Islamic cultural centre under plans put forward by Flintshire Muslim Cultural Society (FMCS).

But before a buyout could take place the building was destroyed in an arson attack in the early hours of February 4, and about 100 nearby residents had to be evacuated from their homes.

Muslim centre in Ipswich burnt to the ground in ‘deliberate attack’

St Michael's Church fireFire investigators are “99 per cent sure” that a blaze which ripped through a church in Ipswich was started deliberately.

The fire at St Michael’s Church in Upper Orwell Street has left the Victorian building structurally unsafe. An inspection of the remains of the vacant church by experts has revealed the roof is too unstable for fire investigators to enter the building.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk police said at this stage it is thought the fire started in the rear of the church shortly after 10pm on Monday. She said: “The roof is very unstable and so it is too dangerous to enter the building at this stage. It looks like the fire was started at the rear of the church and spread straight to the roof.”

Today the owner of the dilapidated Victorian church said the community’s “dream is over”, after 25 years of savings and fundraising “went up in flames”, revealing his has no insurance. Muhammad Manwar Ali, chief executive of Jimas, the organisation that owns the building, was at the forefront of plans to transform the church into a £1million Muslim-run community centre.

Dismayed, Mr Ali returned to the scene this morning as fire investigators and a building inspector assessed the extent of the damage. The roof is completely destroyed and parts of the church were still burning, according to firefighters.

Mr Manwar Ali is set to lose the £350,000 he paid for the church last year out of his own life savings, fundraising and loans from friends. And plans to spend up to £1 million over the next few years on transforming the run-down site have been shelved as the building teeters on the brink of collapse.

But incredibly, Mr Manwar Ali said that even if the police did manage to track down those responsible, he would rather invite them round for a cup of coffee than see them go to prison. He said: “The foolish things is we hadn’t insured it. Hopefully there is nobody who has been harmed or hurt – there could have been somebody inside. I will forgive them (those responsible) and let them know I don’t want to see them in prison. They can come and have free coffee in our shop.”

He stressed that the church would have become a community centre, not a mosque, and that it would have been open to everyone in Ipswich. He said: “We were not doing it for business or to make money for ourselves, even if people find that hard to believe. It wasn’t a Muslim or Asian thing – it would have been a fantastic place for Ipswich.”

British Columbia: Islamic centre sprayed with racist graffiti

Masjid Al-Hidayah graffiti

Neighbours of the Masjid Al-Hidayah and Islamic Cultural Centre are reeling after racist graffiti was scrawled across the front of the Port Coquitlam mosque Wednesday night. The word “sandniggas” was spray-painted onto the front of the building and was visible to drivers and local businesses along the Kingsway Avenue industrial strip.

Bill Thomson, a worker at Boyd Autobody and Glass across the street from the mosque, said it is the first time he has seen any vandalism on the neighbouring property since it opened six years ago. “We were going to go over and wash it off,” he said. “It’s absolutely disgusting.” Thomson said the employees at the auto body decided against cleaning up the mess, believing it could create issues with the mosques insurance company.

Florida congressman stokes Islamophobia

Tea party-backed freshman congressman Allen West, R-Fla., became unhinged at a recent town hall meeting in South Florida when he told a Muslim questioner who defended Islam, “Don’t try to blow sunshine up my butt!”

The questioner was Nezar Hamze, Executive Director of the South Florida chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations, America’s largest Islamic civil liberties group.

When Mr. Hamze responded that he was ashamed to hear a U.S. congressman launching such crude attacks against Islam, West, an Iraq War veteran, shouted back above a storm of whooping and hollering from the largely pro-Rep. West audience, “You attacked us! You attacked us! I went to Muslim countries to defend the freedom of Muslim people. Don’t come up here and try to criticize me. Put the microphone down and go home!”

The exchange began when Hamze asked West if he could cite any passages from the Quran that instruct Muslims to kill innocent people, attack America or kill Americans. West claimed that there is a “verse of the sword” that incites Muslims to violence against “infidels” but he did not elaborate, and neither West nor the noisy and indignant crowd allowed Hamze to comment further.

Hamze’s question was in reference to a statement West had made in January at the “Reclaim American Liberty Conference” that Islam “is not a religion … it’s a theo-political belief system that’s been doing this [promoting terrorism] since 622 AD.” West claims that Muslim terrorists are not following a warped version of Islam; they are following genuine Islamic teachings and the instructions of the Quran to promote world domination through terrorist acts.

“You need to get into the Qur’an,” West advises, “then you can really understand this [terrorism] is not a perversion. . . . They are doing exactly what this book says.”
