Politicians must follow ‘hijab outcry’ with action

Michael Privot, director of the European Network Against Racism, welcomes the development of grassroots initiatives across Europe against racist violence and intolerance. However, he argues:

“Public actions like the ‘hijab outcry‘ in Sweden also communicate the need for more political determination to tackle hate crime. So far, politicians in Sweden and Europe have failed to develop effective responses, and there is often an unwillingness to recognize the severity of the problem.”

RUAP candidate warns that Muslims will take over Australia

Rise Up Australia PartyThe controversial Rise Up Australia Party, known for headline-making, anti-Islam and anti-multiculturalism policies, has endorsed Dale Edwards as their candidate for Leichhardt.

The socially conservative RUAP officially launched their election campaign at the start of August, with Mr Edwards of North Cairns, describing their premise as “to keep Australia Australian. In other words, keep the Judeo-Christian values in place, and one of the main concepts is wanting a multi-ethnic Australia (like we’ve got), but we don’t want multiculturalism, which is the idea of having [migrant] enclaves of people.”

Tower Hamlets: Police still won’t apply for EDL march ban

A planned march through Tower Hamlets by far right group the English Defence League looks set to go ahead this weekend – despite threats of legal action if no ban is enforced.

The borough’s mayor, Lutfur Rahman, was snubbed after requesting a meeting with home secretary Theresa May to call on her to ban the march or face a High Court battle. Sources at the Mayor’s office said a petition against the demonstration has been signed by 10,000 people, as opposition mounted this week.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said a decision on how to police the march will be taken as further intelligence is gathered – and refused to rule out a ban. “We will assess the available intelligence and develop the most proportionate and lawful response,” he said. “Given the dynamic nature of such events, decisions must be taken by the operational commands at the most appropriate time.”

Jewish New Year call for justice for Muslim community: ‘Stop NYPD surveillance!’

“The Jews Against Islamophobia Coalition strongly condemns the policies and activities of the New York City Police Department (NYPD), which, the Associated Press has just revealed, designates mosques as ‘terrorism enterprises’ in order to more easily spy on them and infiltrates Muslim community organizations. For years, the NYPD has targeted the Muslim community on the basis of religion. As we approach the Jewish High Holy Days season, we urge all Jews and Jewish institutions – and all New Yorkers – to join us in publicly and unequivocally opposing the NYPD’s unlawful surveillance program.”

‘Appalling’ racist abuse of Prestonpans shopkeeper

An innocent shopkeeper was branded a “Muslim terrorist” by a drunken Prestonpans man in an incident described as “appalling” by a sheriff.

Ricky McQue walked into the Princes takeaway in Prestonpans and began hurling racist insults towards Husein Oguz who was just opening up. When McQue (33) was asked to leave the premises he called Mr Oguz a “Muslim b*stard” and shouted he was a “terrorist” and a “paedophile”.

The abuse was so loud and prolonged a member of the public who was passing the shop became disturbed by McQue’s behaviour they called police. Haddington Sheriff Court heard on Wednesday last week that, when officers arrived at the Hawthorn Road shop, McQue was still shouting at a distressed Mr Oguz.

Quebec mosque vandalised with pig’s blood

Saguenay mosque blood

Police in Quebec’s Saguenay region have been called in after a local mosque was vandalized over the weekend – splattered with what could be pig blood.

Representatives of the area’s small Muslim community say they believe it to be an isolated incident, and Saguenay Mayor Jean Tremblay agrees. Contacted by The Canadian Press Sunday, Tremblay said he was shocked by what he termed an “isolated and stupid” act of intolerance against a place of worship.

The mayor insisted that most local residents would also be appalled by the attack. “That’s not the mentality people in the region have… All it takes is one or two stupid people for something like this to happen,” he said in an interview. He said the incident undermines the community’s efforts to welcome diversity. “This isn’t the way to show we have an open mind,” he said.

A letter was also sent to the mosque and to the local Radio-Canada station spouting anti-Islamic rhetoric.
