Republican candidate denounces Murfreesboro mosque proposal

Lou Ann ZelenikA Tennessee Republican candidate for Congress says plans to build a mosque in a Nashville suburb pose a threat to her state’s moral and political foundation.

In a Thursday evening statement, 6th District candidate Lou Ann Zelenik said she stands with those who oppose building what she calls “an Islamic training center.” She says the center is not part of a religious movement, but a political one “designed to fracture the moral and political foundation of Middle Tennessee.”

“Until the American Muslim community find it in their hearts to separate themselves from their evil, radical counterparts, to condemn those who want to destroy our civilization and will fight against them, we are not obligated to open our society to any of them,” Zelenik says in the statement.

Zelenik, who calls herself a leader in the Middle Tennessee tea party movement, hopes to replace U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon, who is retiring after 13 terms.

Murfreesboro Islamic Centre: CAIR calls for investigation into second act of vandalism

Not WelcomeA Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization is calling on local, state and national law enforcement agencies to investigate the latest act of vandalism at the site of the proposed Islamic Center of Murfreesboro.

Local authorities were alerted to the second case of vandalism of a sign at the future mosque site on Veals Road near Bradyville Pike Wednesday, when a passing motorist reported the sign had been beaten with “an unknown object.”

The original sign marking the center was vandalized in January by a still-unknown person who wrote “not welcome” in spray-paint.

“A mosque official told CAIR that the latest incident of vandalism has been reported to local police and the FBI,” said CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper, via a press release on behalf of Washington based civil rights organization. “That same official said local law enforcement authorities have been very supportive of the Muslim community and have stepped up police patrols in the area of the proposed mosque.”

CAIR believes the planned expansion of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro is being opposed by individuals who “have made Islamophobic statements at recent public hearings concerning the mosque.”

A candlelight vigil for peace, tolerance and freedom of religion is scheduled for later this evening in Murfreesboro.

Mosque opponents using fear to divide

Last Thursday evening hundreds of residents in my hometown of Murfreesboro, Tenn., attended the Rutherford County Commission meeting to express their outrage over a proposed Islamic center of worship in the community.

This is just the latest in a string of incidents around the country threatening the constitutional rights of Americans just like you and I. A group of citizens recently blocked a proposed mosque in Brentwood, Tenn. There are a growing number of people who are opposed to a mosque planned near ground zero in Manhattan.

The events of 9/11 and other actions taken by al Qaeda planted the seeds of dissent, intolerance, hatred and fear. Those seeds are growing. Al Qaeda’s endgame is destroying our way of life, our American principles and values.

As a Marine who has deployed through out the Middle East, I have worked, trained and broken bread with Muslims. I have known their families and communities. I have fought with them and for them, as I have for this country and my fellow citizens, many of whom are also Muslims. I can’t stand by while some people are accused of being guilty by association of one’s religion and therefore discriminated against.

New York Post columnist warns against ‘New Yorkistan’

There’s no denying the elephant in the room. Neither is there any rejoicing over the mosques proposed for Sheepshead Bay, Staten Island and Ground Zero because where there are mosques, there are Muslims, and where there are Muslims, there are problems.

Before New York becomes New Yorkistan, it is worth noting that the capital of Great Britain was London until it became known as “Londonstan,” degenerated by a Muslim community predominantly from South Asia and Africa, whose first generation of “British Asians” has made the United Kingdom into a launching pad for terrorists….

Mindful of its controversial history, Great Britain welcomed its former colonials who fled their own oppressive regimes for refuge in the Free World….

The assimilation Great Britain had hoped for never happened, as British Asians insulated themselves from mainstream society even more than their parents had, and fomented a deadly, illogical wrath against the western world in which they had been born.

Then, in the 1990s, British Asians bogglingly began to wield Islam as a bargaining chip against the state, and eventually as a tool of terror against the world, using their mosques as dens of iniquity, and exposing the Muslim character which left a lot to be desired despite its obsession with religion….

There is a lot the United States can learn from Great Britain’s rotten experience with a community which refuses to assume responsibility for its evil subculture – and one that only it can successfully eradicate.

New Yorkistan? It’s happening before our eyes.

Islamism, Ramadan and Qaradawi: why Paul Berman is wrong

Marc_LynchIn The Flight of the Intellectuals, Paul Berman argues that it is not violent Islamists who pose the greatest danger to liberal societies in the West but rather their so-called moderate cousins, such as Tariq Ramadan.

Such a reading of contemporary Islamism, however, misses the many nuances of the movement and the real battles between reformers and Salafists.

The ever-excellent Marc Lynch takes on Berman over Islamism, Tariq Ramadan and Qaradawi.

Anti-Islam ad belongs on buses, court is told

SIOA ad

An Ann Arbor group announced Monday it has filed a request with a federal court seeking to require a metro Detroit bus agency to run ads aimed at Muslims who want to leave Islam.

The Thomas More Law Center, a conservative legal group, filed a motion for a temporary restraining order on Thursday that asks a federal judge to side with a New Hampshire-based group that often criticizes Islam. The Thomas More center had filed a lawsuit against SMART last month on behalf of the American Freedom Defense Initiative, Pamela Geller of New York and Robert Spencer of New Hampshire.

Robert Muise, an attorney with the Thomas More center, said the bus agency is a government entity and so it violated the First Amendment by not allowing the ad to run. He said that similar ads have run on buses in Florida and New York. He said that SMART’s own policy says it may “not censor free speech” and is “required to provide equal access to advertising.”

Local Muslim leaders support SMART’s decision. “They surely have the prerogative to deny carrying anti-Muslim ads in a locality which has one of the largest Muslim populations in North America,” said Dawud Walid, head of the Michigan branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Muslim American Society leader condemns ‘religious bigotry’ over Staten Island mosque plan

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Citing what he sees as “religious bigotry” and “hatred,” Ibrahim Ramey, the human and civil rights director for MAS Freedom National – the advocacy arm of the Muslim American Society – penned an open letter today regarding opposition to a plan to build a mosque at the former St. Margaret Mary’s R.C. Church convent in Midland Beach.

Fox News: Sharia law is ‘on its way to American courts’

Oklahoma State Rep. Rex Duncan (R) is worried that “dangerous fools in black robes” are going to impose sharia law on the U.S. court system.

And Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade is right there with him.

Duncan is pushing a ballot measure to prohibit courts from considering international or sharia law when handing down decisions, something he called a “commonsense” proposal on Fox News today.

Fox And Friends host Brian Kilmeade introduced the segment with this explanation of sharia law: “Sharia law is sometimes used to justify cruel punishments like amputations, like stoning, as well as unequal treatment of women. And did you know it’s on its way to American courts?”

Kilmeade also asked Duncan whether he thought the push to impose sharia law is part of “a push by extremists on the west” who want to build a mosque near the World Trade Center, or who were “screaming” at British Soldiers in London when they came home from the war.

“It is a push,” Duncan replied, “and anybody could see it if they would simply open their eyes.”

Another Sunday, another protest against proposed Staten Island mosque

Staten Island protest placardMidland Beach residents opposed to the sale of the empty convent of St. Margaret Mary parish to a Muslim group rallied yesterday afternoon for the second straight Sunday in front of the 2½ -story building, and this time other Staten Islanders joined them, carrying their own protest signs.

“I’m here to support this community because of how frightened everyone is of this group coming in to the neighborhood – the terrorism factor is a big part of it,” said Suzanne Adamo of Castleton Corners, who was born and raised in Midland Beach. She was referring to the Muslim American Society, a national organization whose Brooklyn/Staten Island chapter signed a contract last month with Rev. Keith Fennessy, the parish pastor, to purchase the convent.

One sign on bright yellow cardboard read in black capital letters: “Muslim Brotherhood You Are Not Welcome Here.” A major issue that has energized opponents of the convent-to-mosque conversion is the alleged links of MAS founders to Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, and the belief of many neighborhood residents that the Muslim Brotherhood is itself a terrorist organization.

The U.S. State Department maintains a publicly available list of foreign terrorist organizations. The most current list, dated January 2010, includes the names of 45 groups from around the globe. The Muslim Brotherhood is not on the list.

“I’m very against the way this sale went through – it was deceitful and sinful,” said Carolyn Pinto of New Dorp, who attended St. Margaret Mary elementary school. “This is a Christian community.” Native Islander Christine Marra of Grant City said she was “opposed to the sale of the convent to a non-Christian organization,” and held a hand-written sign that read “Tell the Archdiocese No Mosque. Boycott the Basket.”

Unlike the first rally last Sunday, yesterday’s included a uniformed police presence, and officers restricted protestors to the sidewalk after many spilled out onto Greeley Avenue, raising signs and cheering when drivers of passing vehicles slowed down and honked horns in support.

The rally, with about 175 people at its height, was periodically interrupted by a lone counter-demonstrator standing across the street from the convent. His shouts were ignored by the vociferous yet peaceful crowd. It concluded at 1:30 p.m., with the crowd chanting “USA! USA!” as they dispersed.
