Geert Wilders denounces Prophet as ‘insane, paedophile, rapist murderer’

EDL England Needs a GertGeert Wilders has stepped up his anti-Islam rhetoric by describing the Prophet Mohammed as an “insane, paedophile, rapist murderer” just two weeks before the opening of his trial on charges of inciting race hatred.

The leader of hard-Right Dutch Freedom Party will be prosecuted in an Amsterdam court on April 13 for previous comparisons of Islam to Nazism. On Thursday he fuelled the controversy surrounding his anti-Muslim politics and trial by publishing an article citing academics who accuse Islam’s founder of crimes ranging from child rape to murder.

“The historical Mohammad was the savage leader of a gang of robbers from Medina. Without scruples they looted, raped and murdered,” Mr Wilders claimed in the Dutch magazine HP/De Tijd.

Transport police hunt for EDL racists

The British Transport Police are hunting for a group of men who chanted racist slurs onboard a train on Saturday 5 March – the group are believed to have been travelling to Rochdale for the EDL demonstration which took place that day. The incident happened on the 11.08am Leeds to Manchester Victoria service, when a group of around 50 men boarded the service at Halifax.

Detective Constable Jason Ridgway, of BTP’s Criminal Investigation Department, said:

“The group’s behaviour included chanting racist and inappropriate remarks and aggressively punching and banging on the train’s interior, causing unnecessary fear for passengers and staff onboard the train. The behaviour of these men was outrageous and has no place on the railway – or in the wider community – especially at a time when families are travelling between cities.”

DC Ridgway added: “Racism and Islamophobia in our community and on the rail network is totally unacceptable. Everyone has the right to travel without fear of abuse or threatening behaviour, and when that behaviour is further exacerbated by racist undertones, our stance becomes firmer still. BTP and the wider rail industry will not tolerate any form of racism on the rail network and we will do everything in our power to take action against those responsible.”

If you have information contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 quoting background reference B12/NWA or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Mail resurrects ‘smell of bacon offends Muslims’ story

You may remember the “Cafe owner ordered to remove extractor fan in case smell of frying bacon offends passing Muslims” story in the Daily Mail last October (as you can see from the url, that was the original headline – it was later amended).

The story concerned Stockport Council’s rejection of a retrospective planning application for the retention of an extraction vent to the front of a cafe. This decision was the result of a successful objection by one individual, a Mr Graham Webb-Lee, who lived next door to the cafe and was not himself a Muslim. He stated: “The vent is 12 inches from my front door. Every morning the smell of bacon comes through and makes me physically sick.”

The “Muslim” connection consisted in the fact that Webb-Lee added: “I have a lot of Muslim friends. They refuse to visit me anymore because they can’t stand the smell of bacon.” He also stated that he had “a daughter with an eating disorder” whose health was affected by the odours from the extractor fan and that they made his clothes smell. But the only one among this range of objections that the Mail highlighted was Webb-Lee’s reference to his Muslim visitors.

Richard Bartholomew took the story up at the time, as did Tabloid Watch, and three readers wrote to the Press Complaints Commission objecting to the Mail‘s inaccurate and irresponsible reporting. Predictably, the PCC ruled in favour of the Mail – a decision criticised by Tabloid WatchRoy Greenslade and Sunny Hundal.

Greenslade quoted the bigoted comments that the Mail‘s misleading report had provoked on its website. Some examples:

“Well how about, you go back to your own country and we can eat our food in peace” … “Absolutely ludicrous! If Muslims are affected let them ‘pass by on the other side of the street!’ I’m fed up of hearing about the possibility of offending Muslims in this God forsaken country!”… “If the Muslims don’t like our way of life they know where the airport is. Sick of listening to whinging religious fruitcakes.” And so on.

Greenslade also reproduced a comment on the Mail‘s report by Mr Webb-Lee himself:

“This vent is affecting my children’s health and that is why the council denied planning! Yes, I have some Muslim friends who it offended, but nothing was said about my English friends who avoid my house within opening hours of the shop! Shame on you Daily Mail. You have stirred up lots of racial tension in my area now, so for you its ‘mission accomplished’.”

Today the Mail has returned for a second bite at the cherry with a story headlined “‘A victory for common sense’: Cafe owner wins extractor fan appeal after neighbour claimed ‘smell of bacon offends Muslims'”. It begins, with characteristic disregard for accuracy: “A cafe owner was yesterday celebrating victory after a six-month legal battle to fry bacon triggered by Muslim complaints.” (The original version read: “A cafe owner who was ordered to tear down an extractor fan because the smell of bacon offended Muslims was celebrating a ‘victory for commons [sic] sense’ today.”)

And, again, the Mail‘s misrepresentation of the facts has fuelled the predictable outburst of anti-Muslim bigotry. Exposing racism and intolerance online has provided a screengrab of some of the Facebook comments by supporters of the English Defence League.

Sikh community issues ultimatum to EDL’s Guramit Singh

Sikhs Against EDL 2Sikhs opposed to the English Defence League (EDL) have issued an ultimatum to Guramit Singh, spokesperson for the EDL who claims to be of Sikh heritage. The ultimatum calls for Guramit Singh from Nottingham to publically denounce and distance himself from the EDL by the end of the Vaisakhi festival.

Vaisakhi is a Sikh religious festival that falls on April 13 and it is one of the most significant occasions for the Sikhs, commemorating the establishment of the Khalsa (martial Sikhism) in 1699 by the 10th Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh ji. This year will mark the 312th anniversary of this auspicious occasion and will be celebrated globally with recitals of religious hymns and prayers for world peace.

Should he (Guramit Singh) fail to do so the community will appeal to the highest political authority of the Sikhs, the Akal Takht in the holy city of Amritsar, Punjab, India to formally request excommunication orders for him to be permanently expelling from the Sikh faith for bringing it into disrepute.

The excommunication order, if passed could mean the EDL member being permanently shunned from all aspects of the Sikh community, although that would be an ultimate sanction.

Birmingham councillor Martin Mullaney apologises to Salma Yaqoob

Mullaney slanders SalmaA leading Birmingham Liberal Democrat city councillor has been forced to issue a public apology after accusing a colleague of being a Muslim extremist. Martin Mullaney said he “apologised unreservedly” for stating that Respect councillor Salma Yaqoob supported stoning people to death and wanted to see Britain become an Islamic republic.

The back-down came after a stormy council meeting which saw Coun Yaqoob refuse to join a standing ovation for war hero Lance Corporal Matt Croucher, who won the George Cross for bravery in Afghanistan. The snub led Coun Mullaney to suggest Coun Yaqoob would have stood to applaud a suicide bomber.

He wrote on a website: “I can only assume that if one of the failed 21/7 London suicide bombers had been in the council chamber, Coun Yaqoob would have been demanding the council applaud the failed suicide bomber for their past heroic actions. If Coun Yaqoob had her way, she would be implementing Hadood Law, with hands cut off and stonings.”

At least two councillors have reported Coun Mullaney over the incident to the city’s Standards Committee, which could suspend him from the council. His conduct was also criticised by Birmingham Lib Dem leader Paul Tilsley, although the party is not taking disciplinary action against him.

Coun Mullaney published the following apology to Coun Yaqoob: “I have been made aware of a couple of formal complaints to the city council’s Standards Committee about comments that I recently made relating to you which could potentially have been damaging to you.

“I recognise that my comments were unfounded, insensitive and overstepped the mark in terms of the code of conduct for members.

“As such, I apologise, unreservedly, to you, the complainants and the members of the Standards Committee for those remarks and the hurt that they, undoubtedly, caused. I hope this draws a line under the matter.”

Birmingham Post, 29 March 2011

You can listen to Salma speaking on Woman’s Hour yesterday about the French niqab ban here.

Update:  See also the Birmingham Mail which quotes Salma Yaqoob as stating: “I accept the apology, but it is a shame that it has come in grudging manner after the Standards Board became involved. It proves that I do not have the views attributed to me in the statements by Councillor Mullaney. People may ask why he remains a Cabinet member after this episode. There should be no place in Birmingham for the politics of bigotry and malice.”

EDL’s Alan Lake backs Christian Voice anti-halal campaign

Christian_Voice

Christian Voice will be leafleting football supporters attending the England v Ghana friendly at Wembley Stadium this evening to warn them that halal meat is allegedly being served in the stadium takeaways.

The text of the leaflet can be consulted here. It states:

“We asked the FA to confirm in writing that the beef burgers at Wembley are not halal. They refused. They would not even say if their halal chicken, lamb and any beef on sale is stunned before slaughter. Even if it is, that is not the point. A Muslim slaughterman still chants ‘Bismillah Allahu Akbar’ (meaning ‘In the name of Allah, Allah is the greatest’) over each halal animal killed, sacrificing it to Allah. Anyone buying halal meat will be eating Sharia Law.”

“Eating Sharia Law”! Well, at least we’re spared the usual lying nonsense from right-wing anti-halal campaigners about being motivated by concern for animal welfare.

Alan Lake of the English Defence League, who has a background in right-wing evangelical Christianity, has been plugging the event on his 4 Freedoms site. But without any evident success. On the Protest Against Unlabelled Halal at Wembley Facebook page all of 10 people are listed as “maybe attending”.

Update:  It appears that the leafleting was less than a total success. One supporter who joined Christian Voice leader Stephen Green in handing out the leaflets reports that “a muslim complained and a Policeman arrived with someone from the Brent Council to challenge me as to whether I had sought permission to give them out. I had not… and neither had Stephen… So they seized whet leaflets we had in our hands… and sadly we had to stop”. According to another account, the leaflets that Green and his supporters did manage to distribute were “discarded like confetti all along Wembley Way”.

Multiculturalism strengthens communities, study shows

Multiculturalism is associated with strengthening the ties between different ethnic groups, according to an extensive study of English data.

A research team led by Dr Laia Bécares from the University of Manchester reveals that neighbourhoods with higher ethnic diversity are associated with higher rates of social cohesion, respect for ethnic differences, and neighbours of different backgrounds getting on well together.

The research, mainly funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, found that deprivation, not multiculturalism, was the root cause of fragmented communities.

The paper – published next month in Urban Studies – challenges critics of British multiculturalism, including most recently Prime Minister David Cameron.

“Politicians seem to link racial tensions to the perception that ethnic minority people and newly arrived migrants are not integrated into their host culture,” Dr Bécares said. “But our findings show it is not neighbourhood ethnic profile but neighbourhood deprivation which erodes social cohesion in England.”

She added: “Our study complements other research which shows that multiculturalism hasn’t failed: segregation in the UK is not increasing, and Muslim people are as likely to report they feel British as people from other minority religions.”

CCTV image may help find EDL supporter who attacked police officer

CCTV imageDetectives hope new CCTV images will help them find a man who attacked a police officer at Chester railway station. An initial appeal to find the suspect failed, but British Transport Police hope the release of a new image [left] will encourage further witnesses to step forward.

The incident took place at about 4.40pm on Thursday, November 11, last year following a demonstration by the English Defence League in Chester.

After the demonstration a large number of EDL members arrived at the city’s station to catch trains. BTP officers attended and sought to control a swelling crowd, but as the number of people grew officers became involved in an altercation with several protesters.

During the fight PC Graham Funnell was assaulted twice and was kicked to the groin by one of the demonstrators.

DC Jaime Brannagan said: “PC Funnell was carrying out a civic duty to maintain order and protect members of the public when he was assaulted by the EDL member. BTP simply will not tolerate violence or aggression on the railway and will do everything in its power to bring those who behave inappropriately to justice.”

He added: “We were unsuccessful with our initial appeal to trace the man responsible, but I now hope, with the release of a CCTV image of a man we would like to speak to in connection with the incident, we will be able to jog someone’s memory and bring the offender to justice. It’s possible the offender is from Shropshire as several others in the group bought tickets to Shrewsbury, but it is also possible he is local to Cheshire or Merseyside.”

If you recognise the man from the CCTV, or have any information in relation to the incident, please contact BTP on 0800 40 50 40 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. In all calls please quote reference 389 of 11/11/10.

Portsmouth: far right groups may be fuelling increase in race attacks

Portsmouth mosque demonstration

Far right groups are thought to be one of the causes behind a rise in race hate attacks in Portsmouth, The News can reveal.

New figures show that 455 incidents were reported to the city’s Racial Awareness Service over a nine-month period – a 25 per cent year-on-year rise. Police also say hate crime – which includes those targeted because of their race or religion – went up by 16 per cent in the city to 317 last year. Fareham, Gosport, Havant and Waterlooville also saw a nine per cent rise in hate crime.

Sharon Furtado, who manages Portsmouth City Council’s Racial Awareness Service, said: “The rise (in race attacks) could be due to a whole host of reasons. Last year we had the elections and the British National Party and far right groups had more of a platform to express their views. Sometimes people listen to them and it touches a chord with them. It could also be down to the recession and there being a feeling that immigrants are coming in and taking jobs. We don’t know what the trigger is that makes someone decide to act.”

Last November, up to 100 people were involved in a demonstration at the Jami Mosque in Victoria Road North, Southsea [pictured]. The protest was sparked after a small group of Muslim extremists – not from Portsmouth – burned poppies in London during the two-minute silence on Armistice Day. The English Defence League was blamed for organising the protests, which resulted in several arrests and charges.
