Fascist demonstrates need for new law

In a racist diatribe based on a News of the World report of the conviction of one Dulu Miah on a manslaughter charge in Ipswich, Nick Griffin of the BNP underlines the need for a new anti-incitement law:

“Miah appears to be in the usual mould for such racist killers. Let’s say it before the new ‘law’ gags us on this as well: He’s an Asian. But he’s not a Hindu, and Hindus hardly ever attack their non-Hindu neighbours. He’s not a Sikh, and we wouldn’t expect him to be, because Sikhs hardly ever attack their non-Sikh neighbours (in fact, when it comes to violent crime, both groups seem to have a lower offending rate than the national average). No, he’s a Muslim. And why should anyone expect anything else, because the vast majority of the killers of the white victims of racist attacks in Britain are Muslims. ‘Fight those of the Unbelievers who live near to you, and show them how harsh you can be.’ (The Koran. Surah 8.123)”

Religious hatred bill is unveiled

bnp-islam-posterControversial plans to make incitement to religious hatred illegal are being unveiled by the government. The government says the legislation is a response to the concerns of faith groups, particularly Muslims.

The Muslim Council of Britain has welcomed the move, arguing that the courts have already extended such protection to Sikh and Jewish people. Sher Khan, a council spokesman, said to protect some groups but not others contravened the European Convention on Human Rights.

The BNP states that the new law “is intended to stop the British National Party and other individuals pointing out that Islamic fundamentalism poses a serious threat to the well being of Britain. It has been drafted at the behest of Muslim organisations and New Labour’s increasing dependence upon the Islamic vote to stay in power has led to the creation of this piece of legislation. The law is a further erosion of free speech and one which even gay actor and comedian Stephen Fry called ‘a sop to Muslims’ on Radio 4 yesterday afternoon.”

The fascists promise: “If the Bill does become law the BNP will not stop its public awareness campaign [sic] against militant Islam and we will find ways around the legislation to continue to point out that the Islamic wolf is already in the secular/Christian/non-Muslim lamb’s pen.”

Over at Jihad Watch, under the heading “Freedom of speech in grave peril”, Robert Spencer warns that the adoption of such legislation “would be a cornerstone of the Islamization of Britain”.

Nazis denounce ‘soccer strip concession to Islamics’

“The influence of Islam on Britain continues apace and the latest news from a Glasgow football club should serve as a wake up call to those who fail to see the extent to which our Christian country is rapidly yielding to every concession demanded by those who follow this alien faith.”

BNP condemns Muslim mayor

“The world’s largest religion is now number one faith in Greater Manchester. This is the conclusion which could be drawn from last weekend’s distinctly non-British spectacle when the city’s first Islamic Mayor was inaugurated in the city chambers.

“The ceremony on May 22nd appeared as if would be more suitable at home in the Middle East or Pakistan, than Britain’s third largest city. The swearing in of mayor Afzal Khan took place against a background chanting of ‘Tala Al-Badru Alayna’ sung in Arabic and was followed by recitations from the Koran. Only after this clear mark of an alien faith was stamped on the proceedings were prayers said, ‘of other religions’.”

BNP: ‘Muslim extremists attack British freedom of speech’

“We can see that the Islamic religious hatred and intolerance of Western liberal values such as freedom of speech that led to the murder of Theo Van Gogh in Holland also has a growing power base in this country.”

It’s notable that the fascists, no doubt inspired by the example of Pim Fortuyn, are increasingly adopting the language of liberal Islamophobia. See also here.

‘Terrible disease spreading in Britain!’ sneers Spencer

“A new epidemic is spreading in the British Isles, and no one can find the cause! It’s called (gasp) ‘Islamophobia’! Children as young as 13 are displaying signs of Islamophobia and are voicing their support for the British National Party, researchers have found. Horror of horrors! As young as 13???? Can’t they be inoculated against this dread disease? Why, of course they can. A good dose of multiculturalism is doubtless in the offing.”

Robert Spencer takes a relaxed view of the report that British teenagers are drawn towards racism and fascism.

Fear and hatred of Muslims on increase in young generation

Children as young as 13 are displaying signs of Islamophobia and are voicing their support for the British National Party, researchers have found.

Young teenagers are increasingly saying they have negative views towards Muslims and do not want Islamic culture expressed in the classroom. The study of 1,500 students aged 13 to 24 was presented at the annual conference of the British Psychological Society in Manchester yesterday.

Researchers asked students from 14 secondary schools and one further education college in York for their views on Islam since 11 September 2001. Three of the schools were from the independent sector and the others came from a wide geographical and socio-economic area.

Nathalie Noret, the lead researcher, from York St John’s College, said: “The younger pupils were more likely to exhibit extreme views and Islamophobia than older students, and there were no differences between schools.” She added that Islamophobia was a “double whammy” as it discriminated against people not just on the basis of religion but also the colour of their skin.

Overall, 43 per cent of the participants said their attitudes towards Muslims had got worse or much worse since the attacks. A quarter said they had worsened still further since the invasion of Iraq.

Ten per cent of girls and 23 per cent of the boys said they would object to female Muslim school pupils wearing a hijab in the classroom.

When asked about the British National Party, almost 10 per cent said they either agreed or agreed strongly with the views of its far-right politicians, with 15 per cent saying they were neutral.

Harry’s Place and Islamophobia Watch

Over at Harry’s Place, the eponymous blogger offers a critique of Islamophobia Watch and challenges our characterisation of certain leftists and liberals as Islamophobes. Compared with some of the anti-Muslim rants that have appeared on his site, it’s quite a reasoned piece – but entirely wrong, of course.

In his critique Harry quotes part of the Runnymede Trust’s definition of Islamophobia, which is reproduced on our site: “Islam is seen as a monolithic bloc, static and unresponsive to change.”

He claims that most of the leftists and liberals criticised on our blog would reject that view and therefore cannot be characterised as Islamophobes: “The whole point of supporting liberal progressives, socialists or gay activists in Muslim countries or in the ‘Muslim community’ is that there is the potential for change and that Islam most certainly isn’t a monolothic bloc.”

The problem with this argument is that, if you take the Runnymede Trust definition absolutely literally, then Islamophobia doesn’t exist anywhere in the world. Even fascists are prepared to make a formal distinction between different tendencies within Islam, along the lines Harry proposes.

Swastikas daubed on French mosque and schools

Vandals scrawled dozens of swastikas and racial slurs on the walls of a mosque and two schools in eastern France, police said Friday.

Early Friday, police in the town of Soultz, located south of Strasbourg, discovered five swastikas and racial slurs written in black marker on the bulletin board of the local mosque.

Local Muslim leader Abdelhaq Nabaoui denounced the incident, saying: “These criminal schemes come on top of numerous acts in recent months that have directly targeted Alsacians who are practicing Muslims.”

“This has to stop,” Nabaoui added, calling on local authorities to find the guilty parties and bring them to justice.

In the nearby town of Guebwiller, intruders used black marker to daub four dozen swastikas, as well as racial epithets, on the walls of a middle school in the early hours of Thursday, police said.

A few more swastikas were scrawled on the walls of a nearby high school and a bus shelter in a neighbouring town, probably by the same vandals, whom police described as teenagers “who are not necessarily linked to neo-Nazi groups”.

Police said the incident could be a “silly provocation” aimed at German exchange students attending classes in the two schools.

Wilders unveils policies

AMSTERDAM — Independent right-wing MP Geert Wilders has unveiled an election programme said to be “plagiarised” from Pim Fortuyn. In it, Wilders calls for general tax cuts, a reduction in bureaucracy, improved safety and a significant cut in immigration.

Announcing his intention to run at the 2007 election, Wilders said he was “independent” of the “self-satisfied political elite who lost their way long ago and are at the point of saying farewell to age-old Dutch roots in exchange for multiculturalism, culture relativism and a European super state”.

Wilders — whose party (www.geertwilders.nl) stands to win four seats in Parliament if an election was held now — said he was in favour of a smaller government. This means reduced regulations, tax cuts and cuts to social security to prevent the collapse of the economy.

He called for billions of euros in cuts to the overseas development budget — retaining only emergency aid — abolition of the Education and Economic Affairs ministries and reducing the public service by 50 percent. Child allowance payments should also be reduced.

Wilders claimed that scrapping minimum wage laws and liberalising redundancy legislation would lead to greater employment, news service NOS reported on Monday.

Designed primarily to prevent marriage and family unification migration, he urged for Dutch borders to be closed for five years to non-western immigrants. No more asylum seekers should be allowed to enter the country.

Focusing on integration, Wilders said the present non-committal integration policy should be scrapped. Instead, those who do no integrate adequately and do not have Dutch citizenship should be forced out of the country immediately. Islamic schools should also be abolished, he said.

Islamic veils should be banned during public functions, Wilders said.
