Breivik demands medal for killing ‘Labour Party traitors’ he holds responsible for ‘Islamic colonisation’

Anders Breivik in handcuffsThe Norway gunman who killed 77 people in twin attacks in July asked an Oslo court Monday to immediately free him and demanded the country’s highest military award, sparking derision from survivors.

Showing no sign of remorse, 32-year-old Anders Behring Breivik said the massacre was “a preventive attack against state traitors” who were guilty of “ethnic cleansing” due to their support for a multi-cultural society. “I do not accept imprisonment. I demand to be immediately released,” the rightwing extremist told the court before it ordered that he be held in detention until his trial opens on April 16.

Dutch Council of State on ‘burqa ban’

The Dutch Council of State says it should be up to women themselves to decide whether or not to wear garments which cover the face. The highest government advisory body argues that ministers shouldn’t use a general ban to rule out the choice of some women to wear the burqa.

Last Monday, the government sent draft legislation for a ‘burqa ban’ to parliament. The proposal would outlaw the wearing in public of face covering articles such as burqas, full-face helmets and balaclavas.

One of the reasons being put forward by ministers to justify a ban is that the burqa and similar articles of clothing run counter to the equality of the sexes. The council, however, thinks this is something to be judged by individual women themselves.

EDL supporter and former BNP member plastered window with anti-Islamic posters

Darren ConwayA former BNP member has been convicted of a religiously aggravated public order offence for putting anti-Islamic literature in his window.

Darren Conway, 44, claimed he displayed the posters because he wanted to force his letting agents to improve his flat. Lincoln magistrates convicted him and sent the case to Lincoln Crown Court for sentencing. Conway of Heaton Street, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, admitted growing 16 cannabis plants found in the flat. He was arrested in April last year after a complaint from a nearby shop worker about the posters.

Edward Johnson, prosecuting, described the material on his windows as grossly offensive towards the Muslim faith. Conway admitted that at the time of the offence he was a member of the BNP and a supporter of the English Defence League but said he had since left the BNP. He downloaded most of the material from the internet, the court heard.

Conway told the court that he acted recklessly in an attempt to draw attention to his rented property, with the aim of getting the letting agents to carry out improvements.

Amsterdam police chief reluctant to enforce veil ban, Wilders’ party not happy

The far-right anti-Islam Freedom Party PVV, which props up the minority government in parliament, has demanded that the Dutch police corps enforce the burqa ban. The PVV is supported by Justice Minister Ivo Opstelten on the issue.

PVV MP Joram van Klaveren was speaking on Sunday in response to remarks made by the chief of Amsterdam’s police corps, Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg, on national TV talk show Eva Jinek op Zondag. Mr Aalbersberg said it should be left up to the police officer on duty to decide whether or not to write out a ticket for a Muslim wearing a burqa or niqab. The police chief added issuing a warning should also be an option.

A right-wing extremist, who me? Wilders objects to inclusion in German pamphlet on far right

Zwischen propaganda und mimikryPVV leader Geert Wilders has demanded the German ambassador explain why he and the anti-islam party are mentioned in a 32-page leaflet warning of the dangers posed by far-right political groupings.

The brochure, paid for by the German justice ministry, states that right-wing populist and radical parties could be a breeding ground for terrorism. Wilders is mentioned twice by name and one section includes his photograph. The folder also explains how neo-nazi strategists use social networks.

Wilders used the microblogging service Twitter to urge the Dutch government to distance itself from this “scandalous” statement and said questions will be asked in parliament.

Party leaders unite against Scottish Defence League march

Four of Scotland’s highest profile politicians have urged councillors to block moves by the far-right Scottish Defence League to march in Glasgow.

SNP deputy leader Nicola Sturgeon, and Scots Labour, Conservative and Lib Dem leaders, Johann Lamont, Ruth Davidson and Willie Rennie are backing the move. In an open letter, they say such a march would bring “vile, toxic hate”.

The Scottish Defence League (SDL) has applied to the council to hold a march on 25 February. The SDL is an offshoot of the English Defence League (EDL). Both groups have been associated with violence at previous gatherings.

Ms Sturgeon, Ms Lamont and Ms Davidson are among 24 signatories to the letter which opposes any SDL march in Glasgow.

Front National divided over National Assembly candidate’s racist cartoons

Stéphane Poncet cartoons

The Collectif contre l’Islamophobie en France draws our attention to the controversy over racist and Islamophobic cartoons posted on the Villeurbanne Front National blog by Stéphane Poncet, who is an FN candidate in the forthcoming elections to the National Assembly.

Marine Le Pen, who is struggling to get the 500 nominations she requires to stand in the presidential election and consequently needs to project a moderate image, has dissociated herself from Poncet, stating that she “deeply regrets” the publication of the drawings on an FN website. The party’s vice-president Louis Aliot has said that disciplinary action will be taken against Poncet.

The CCIF wonders how the FN is in a position to take such action “when Marine Le Pen herself adopts this hatred of Islam and foreigners as a founding principle of her political programme”.

Daily Mail inspires far right – again

BNP 'strict Muslim' report

This report on the BNP website probably looks familiar. That’s because it’s lifted directly from an earlier report in the Daily Mail. Yet again we find the Mail providing the far right with material to stoke anti-Muslim hatred. The English Defence League’s protest in Leicester on Saturday has similarly been inspired by the paper’s irresponsible and inaccurate reporting (see here and here). Perhaps the Mail‘s editor Paul Dacre might be asked to explain himself when he appears at the Leveson Inquiry next week.
