Head says Lennon’s school visit would have been ‘a good opportunity for our students to hear about extremism’

Duchess's High School AlnwickThe headteacher of the school at the centre of the media storm over the cancelled appearance of Tommy Robinson has said that the decision was related to protocol on school visitors. Duchess’s Community High School head Maurice Hall said:

“The planned visit was organised through the Quilliam Foundation, a well-respected anti-extremism think-tank and would have involved Tommy Robinson and Usama Hasan (co-founder of the Quilliam Foundation). This would have been a good opportunity for our students to hear about extremism and how it develops, as well as what can be done to counter the dangers of extremism.

“However, it appears that procedures for outside visitors to school may not have been followed on this occasion and so the visit was cancelled. We are now carrying out a full review of policies and procedures relating to visitors taking part in lessons, which will be concluded by the end of half-term.

“We hope to find other opportunities to help our students, who live in a relatively non-diverse community, to meet and learn from people from a range of cultures and faiths.”

French MEPs criticise government’s silence over mosque desecration

French members of the European Parliament from the Alliances des Outre-Mers and Front de Gauche have issued a joint statement criticising leading figures the government for failing to condemn the desecration of a mosque in the French overseas territory of Mayotte, allegedly by soldiers in the French army.

Against a background of official denunciations of the antisemitism of Franco-Cameroonian comedian Dieudonné M’bala M’bala, the MEPs’ statement warns the government against applying double standards when it comes to taking a stand against racial and religious hatred.

Fascists behind campaign against Muslim cemetery

Britain First Solihull cemetery campaign (2)

A controversial application seeking approval to build a 4,000-plot Muslim cemetery on Greenbelt land in Catherine de Barnes has received well over 1,000 objections.

But many of those are from a ‘patriotic political movement’ called Britain First, which has set up a website dedicated to stopping the development.

The organisation – which has the motto ‘Taking Our Country Back’ on its logo – also has a ready-penned letter of complaint which objectors simply have to add their details to to make an objection to the scheme.

Solihull Council is currently in the process of confirming which complaints are genuine in terms of including their name and address.

Jerusalem councilman urges Muslims: ‘Leave Israel’

Aryeh King, Jerusalem Councilman of the United Jerusalem faction, has begun a new campaign distributing thousands of fliers to Arab residents of Jerusalem, urging them to leave Israel.

“You have many large countries that you can live in. Understand that we returned to Israel to fulfill what is written in the Torah,” reads the flier. “It isn’t easy for millions of people to abandon their homes without any monetary help. Therefore we propose that you negotiate with the state of Israel to receive economic aid to move and live elsewhere.”

King is the Chairperson of the Jerualem Municipality’s Environment Committee, as well as its Emergency and Security Committee. He is also the director and founder of the Israel Land Fund, and ran as number 4 on the list of candidates for Otzmah Leyisrael in the last Knesset elections.

Anti-Islamic group patrols clubs to ‘protect’ Polish women

Polish Defence League anti-Islam bannerThe far-right Polish Defence League (PLO) has launched “patriotic patrols” in Poland’s bars and nightclubs in a bid, it says, to protect Polish women from being chatted up by Muslims.

The Polish Defence League, which describes itself as “showing the true face of Islam and acting against the Islamisation of Europe,” started the operation in December in cities including Warsaw, Poznan and Krakow. “We are there to observe how Muslims behave and to intervene,” the league stated on its official web site.

“In the space of one evening, in hundreds of places across the country, incidents occur involving the seduction of our female compatriots,” the league claims. “This is a fight for the future of our country and our women,” the PLO claims. “Because one of these girls, unwittingly charmed by an exotic prince could, along with her offspring, end up very badly in the Islamic world, which is advancing on us with great strides.”

According to the PLO, which currently has 3600 fans on its Facebook page, Polish women are warned during the patrols about the “threats” of getting involved with Muslim men, the Gazeta Wyborcza daily reports.

Quebec values charter takes a beating at opening day of public hearings

Samira LaouniA Muslim woman wearing a hijab put the Parti Québécois on the defensive in a sharp exchange on the first day of hearings over the secular charter that would prohibit public sector employees from wearing overt religious symbols.

Samira Laouni told the minority PQ government that its proposed legislation was creating social tensions unheard of in Quebec until now. Some Muslim women have been spat on and have had their head scarf torn off, she said. “I’ve been here for 15 years. I have never seen it like this until now,” she told the committee.

Ms. Laouni was among the first seven to appear at the National Assembly, but 250 parties have submitted briefs and 200 hours have been set aside for presentations over the next several weeks.

The issue has divided Quebeckers, and opposition parties accuse the PQ of trying to take advantage of the storm of protest to attract enough voter support, especially in predominantly francophone ridings, to win a majority government in an election many expect will be held this spring.

The PQ minister responsible for democratic institutions, Bernard Drainville, went to great lengths to defend the bill he tabled last November. He argued that only 20 per cent of Muslim women in Quebec wear the veil. “That is one in five that won’t be affected by the restrictive measures,” he said.

Ms. Laouni lashed back by reminding the minister that it was his responsibility to protect minorities. “In a democratic country you need to think about the 1 per cent that is affected. You don’t think about the absolute majority, you think about the minority that is being crushed,” she said.

Application to hold rally against Islamophobia in Moscow will be rejected

City Hall plans to turn down a petition by Muslim activists to hold a rally “against Islamophobia and Caucasus-phobia” on Manezh Square, a Moscow security official said.

The area “doesn’t have the conditions for holding mass actions,” the city’s regional security department head Alexei Mayorov said, adding that an official ruling would be issued later, Interfax reported.

Rally organizers said in their petition, filed Monday, that they expected the event to attract 1 million people, Moskovsky Komsomolets reported.

The meeting’s rejection follows news that of one of the rally organizers – Dagestani activist Mukhammad Magomedov – saying that security officials charged him last week with “participating in an extremist group,” and banned him from leaving his native region. The charges carry a punishment of up to two years in prison.
