Political correctness has crushed criticism of Islam in US, Robert Spencer claims

Over at Front Page Magazine Robert Spencer has a whinge about “the abysmal state of public discourse about Islamic terrorism today. The forces of political correctness as well as prominent American Islamic advocacy groups seem to be doing all they can to make sure that the American people are not exposed to any serious investigation of the genuine root causes of Islamic terrorism – such as I have undertaken in my new book The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades) [never miss an opportunity to give the book a plug, eh Robert?]. Even speaking the truth about Islam is becoming increasingly difficult in today’s stifling politically correct atmosphere”.

Well, looks like Islamophobia Watch is soon going to be out of a job, then.

‘Dire results of theory of multiculturalism’

“The theory of multiculturalism and its malevolent companion, political correctness, arrived on these shores from North America and was quickly taken up by the liberal, urban political elite. These theories were foisted on the British people without any consultation and the terrible consequences are only appearing now…. A Muslim festival like Eid is given as much importance as Christmas or Easter. There is something very wrong here.

“Minority groups, especially those from the Indian sub-continent, were encouraged not to integrate or mix, but to keep their own customs as though the UK did not exist…. So in many of our cities we have a society within the wider society with a religion, Islam, which often seems to the outsider to be more of a political movement than a way to being at peace with God and one’s neighbour. This society within a society has been encouraged to revel in its alleged victimhood, and, due to its lack of maturity, has never looked at its own faults but blames outsiders for all its ills…..

“The day that Muslims can accept rational criticism without the predictable cries of ‘Islamophobia’ will be the day when they are finally accepted into British society like the descendants of other immigrant groups over the centuries. Fear of western secular society and its achievements is perhaps due to the nature of Islam itself.”

Judeo-Christian values rule OK

“Islam is not currently in the battle for men’s minds. Outside (and even inside) the Muslim world, it gains power largely through force. There are non-Muslims who convert to Islam out of sheer conviction, but in general, when Islam gains a foothold or actually attains power in a non-Muslim society, it is either through force or threats of force – e.g., Sudan, Thailand, the Philippines, Nigeria; or through a large immigration of Muslims – e.g., Western Europe. Its contemporary spread is not due to the power of its intellectual appeal, let alone the record of its contemporary social and moral achievements.”

How to nuke Mecca

“Muslim survivalists will only force the end to the terrorist activities springing up from amongst them when made to pay a terrible price. One ‘terrible price’ currently under debate is a nuclear attack on Mecca should any 9/11 scale attack (or larger) occur on US soil. I am in favor of such planning in the event of a catastrophic strike against America, because I believe the burden of loss needs to be shifted decidedly to fundamental Muslims themselves (and what they value most) if there is to be any hope of ending all this madness. To yield to Islamists’ demands and take the option off the table would be strategically stupid….

“But as has been pointed out by Robert Spencer, nuking Mecca could also be seen by Islamists as a weak action and could serve to unify Muslims and increase Jihad. But this is only true if not done properly and the city is left salvageable within a few years. Once devoted Muslims carry out their next major strike on America, the Mecca plan should be carried out without hesitation or warning. No Hiroshima class atomic wimp-weapon will do, only the 1,000 times more powerful hydrogen fusion device will work for this important job…. The strike is then repeated every 5 years or so if any kind of clean-up is attempted. Medina needs one too, to prevent Arabs from declaring the transference of the holy site to the secondary location.”

Muslim public holiday? Appeasement of Islamist fanatics, says Mark Steyn

“Responding to Islamist terrorism in Britain and elsewhere, Germany is considering introducing a Muslim public holiday. As Mathias Dopfner, chief executive of Axel Springer, put it: ‘A substantial fraction of Germany’s government – and, if polls are to be believed, the German people – believe that creating an official state Muslim holiday will somehow spare us from the wrath of fanatical Islamists’. Great. At least the 1930s’ appeasers did it on their own time. But, in recasting appeasement as yet another paid day off, the new proposal cunningly manages to combine the worst instincts of the old Europe and the new.”

In an article that is even more incoherent and rambling than usual, Mark Steyn fulminates against the “German Islamist Appeasement Bank Holiday Weekend”.

Telegraph readers debate hijab

Hijab is Our RightAs you might anticipate, there is the usual racist crap: “… the real intention of this apparel is to denigrate women and deny them their individuality. As a Western woman, I regard this apparel as insulting to my sex, my religious beliefs and my cultural mores. If Muslims wish to enjoy the manifold benefits of living in the West, they must both respect and observe our customs as well as our rules.” (Katherine Barlow, Vienna, Austria)

However, some letter writers take a very different line:

“It will be a very poor outcome for all of us if we, the British people, allow ourselves to be manipulated by this campaign into attacking Muslim women. I would hope that the ideals inherent in the whole of our British culture would continue to respect women of all races, colours and creeds. Whatever these terrorists think, we are now a multicultural society…. Muslim women should not discard their hijabs. Otherwise the terrorists will have won.” (Geoffrey Collingwood, Brackley, Northants)

“Katherine Barlow (Letters, Aug 5) regards Muslim women’s apparel as an insult to her mores. I am English and have lived here all my life. I prefer not to wear the cleavage-displaying, thigh-revealing garb favoured by many of my compatriots. If I can choose to dress how I please, why on earth should Muslim women be criticised for similar choices?” (Linda Garrett, Potters Bar, Herts)

It’s a disturbing thought that there are Torygraph readers who take a much more progressive position on this issue than many liberals do.

FOSIS takes on Times over Anthony Browne

FOSIS’s letter of complaint in response to Anthony Browne’s Times article attacking the Muslim Association of Britain and Yusuf al-Qaradawi has received a reply (pdf) claiming that “neither The Times nor Mr Browne is pursuing an anti-Muslim agenda” and, even more bizarrely, that Browne’s description of MAB as “Islamic fascists” did not “amount to trying to undermine the good work that the Muslim Association of Britain is doing”!

MEMRI stitches up Azzam Tamimi

Azzam Tamimi“In an August 29, 2005 article in the London Arabic-language daily Al-Quds Al-‘Arabi, titled ‘The London Bombing: Harm Is Brought Upon the Muslims Only by Their Own’, British Islamist Dr. ‘Azzam Al-Tamimi argues that Muslim critics are Islam’s worst enemies….

“Al-Tamimi is referring primarily to liberal Arab and Muslim writers who, following the London bombings, criticized the previous long-standing British policy of tolerance towards Islamist preachers of hatred and violence. He calls these liberal writers traitors….

“Al-Tamimi’s argument echoes a similar accusation by Sheikh Omar Bakri Muhammad, termed ‘the notorious fundamentalist’ by the London Arabic-language daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat. Following the London bombings, Bakri, the head of the Islamist Al-Muhajiroon movement in Britain, fled to a Lebanon hideout from his London base of activity of many years.”

The WPI and the right-wing journalist

“Premier Dalton McGuinty was tapdancing very cautiously around sharia law yesterday. And rightly so. Of all the nasty issues likely to blow up in his face before the next election, this is a huge one. What it boils down to is, how much multiculturalism is too much? Chowing down on souvlaki at Taste of the Danforth is one thing. But what about entrenching an ancient legal system that, in its extreme forms, calls for stoning and amputation?”

Christina Blizzard in the Toronto Sun, 7 September 2005

The article includes a friendly interview with Homa Arjomand of the Worker Communist Party of Iran. I confess to being unfamiliar with Christina Blizzard’s oeuvre. However, I googled her name and found her described as “one of the most partisan pro-right writers in Ontario in the mainstream media”.

Australia considers outlawing Hizb ut-Tahrir

Hizb ut-Tahrir in Australia will be banned if intelligence authorities judge it a terrorist threat, the Australian PM said Monday, August 8, days after the UK declared it would ban the controversial Islamic group. “If ASIO tells us that an organization like this … does represent a threat, then we’ll take action to ban it,” Howard told Macquarie Radio, CNSNews reported Monday.
