UOIF Le Bourget congress underway amid fears of anti-Muslim backlash

UOIF Le Bourget congress

Hundreds of Muslims began a four day Islamic congress in Paris on Friday, as fears grew of a religious backlash following the Toulouse killings.

More than 200 organisations from all over France are taking part in the four-day event which comes just weeks after Al Qaeda-inspired gunman Mohamed Merah shot dead seven people.

Many think the tragedy has led to French Muslims being marginalised further and feel there is a need to reassure the wider French community. 22-year-old Sara Taharaoui from a south-eastern Paris suburb said: “The whole Muslim community condemns what happened with Mereh. Terrorism isn’t part of the Islamic religion and we are here to condemn his acts.”

Some Muslims said they felt increased scrutiny after the French government decided to ban several foreign Muslim clerics from entering France. The men were due to give speeches at the conference.

Some political analysts think President Nicolas Sarkozy is playing up fears ahead of first-round leadership elections in a fortnight. Many think he’s not done enough to distinguish between the radical few and the mainstream Muslim community.

Dearborn has ‘history of discriminating against Christians who want to speak out against the internal threat of Sharia law and Islam’ says lawyer, after judge rules in favour of Terry Jones’ mosque protest

Terry Jones ban sharia placardA federal judge ruled today in favor of Quran-burning pastor Terry Jones, saying he can protest this Saturday outside a Dearborn mosque without having to sign a legal agreement from the city of Dearborn.

U.S. District Judge Denise Page Hood ruled in favor of Jones, who intends to hold a protest against Islamic extremism at the biggest mosque in metro Detroit. The city of Dearborn has said it wanted Jones to sign a “hold harmless” agreement that would require the Florida pastor to forfeit all legal rights stemming from any possible incident at the planned protest.

Earlier this week, the Thomas More Law Center, a conservative Christian group in Ann Arbor, filed a lawsuit against the city on behalf of Jones, saying his constitutional rights were being attacked by the city because of the requirement to sign the “hold harmless” agreement. Judge Hood said the requirement “violate the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.”

Attorneys ask judge to throw out legal challenge to Murfreesboro Islamic Center

Murfreesboro Islamic Center under construction

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The final legal hurdle over construction of a mosque in Murfreesboro may be over.

County attorneys asked a judge to throw out the final legal challenge on Wednesday. Opponents have argued the county failed to give sufficient public notice before approving the project.

The judge will review the motion on April 19. County officials are hoping he will toss out a lawsuit that claims they did not give proper notice when approving building plans for the new Islamic Center of Murfreesboro.  Mosque opponents say they are readying a response.

Meanwhile, major progress has been made in construction of the center.  Distinctive arches have taken shape, the frame of the building is complete and workers are starting to put bricks around it.

“We are so excited,” said Imam Ossama Bahloul.  “I think when we have the new facility it will be a time for us to celebrate freedom of religion.”

Geller’s anti-Muslim campaign is ‘abhorrent and morally repugnant’, says ADL national chair

Geller should not be allowed to get away with playing the victim and hiding behind the mask of a “patriot and proud Zionist.”

Geller’s self-righteous campaign to show the world the “true face” of Islam is abhorrent and morally repugnant. Geller, in views she outlines in her blog, has linked Islam to bestiality and rape of minors, compared Muslims to Nazis and asserted that Islam inspired Hitler. The Anti-Defamation League has closely followed her anti-Muslim scapegoating and that of Stop Islamization of America, the organization she leads, and has posted additional examples of her comments on its website.

Terrorism inspired by fundamentalist Islam is indeed a true threat to America, Israel and democracies around the world. But in directing her rhetoric at the entire Islamic faith – indeed, in supporting campaigns to suggest that Muslims should abandon their faith entirely – Geller fuels and fosters anti-Muslim bigotry in society.

Robert G. Sugarman, national chair of the Anti-Defamation League, writes in the The Jewish Week, 3 April 2012

Sugarman was responding to a letter from Geller in which she claimed that the ADL’s national director Abe Foxman “demonizes proud Jews who love Israel and fight for freedom, while he kowtows to the Islamic jihad”. She really is completely off her head, isn’t she?

Why the US Right promotes Islamophobia

Muslims Are Coming cartoon

It seems that the Republican presidential aspirants’ fervor to confront Islam has receded a bit with the decline and fall of Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich, but one can likely still count on Rick Santorum to come up with some bon mots on the threat posed by Shariah law. Those who fear that hands will soon be lopped off shoplifters caught in Cleveland appear to be making much ado about nothing, but there is a much broader and more insidious agenda that is really playing out behind the scenes. Perry, Gingrich, and Santorum are all smart enough to know that Islamic law is hardly poised to dominate the U.S. legal system, but they are using it as the wedge issue to deny the patriotism of Muslims in general and fuel the demands to exercise a military option against Iran.

Why Galloway won (according to a Daily Mail blogger)

Galloway’s victory is a vindication for, above all people, Enoch Powell.

Powell warned of the dangers that mass immigration would have. Ted Heath failed to listen, what we have is Galloway – a product of classic third world, unassimilated, rabble-rousing, engineering of election results.

Galloway’s victory shows that we now have our ghettos. We have segregation. We have a divided land with the consequences of not assimilating failed third-world backward cultures within us. These are growing and multiplying generation after generation.

Respect has a future, and provided the Islamic population continues to grow at its present rate, and is not fully assimilated, it is an Islamist one. Be warned.

Without the reason of modern Western Democractic peoples that acquired democracy over time and sacrifice – the people who voted for Galloway might as well be going for any demagogue in Islamabad or Pyongyang.

Galloway’s victory is dangerous and demonstrates the ugly alliance between the far left and Islamists….

He promotes multiculturalism, or cultural egalitarianism – the idea that all cultures are equal – the absurd idea that Sharia and the common-law are the same. He and his radical Islamist followers do this with contempt for British people on their own soil.

George Galloway’s victory in the Bradford West election was remarkable. It was also a dangerous illustration of the foothold Islamist extremism now has in our political life thanks to multiculturalism.

A runaway victory for George Galloway – and all praise to Allah

George Galloway waves to supporters in Bradford

That is the headline to Andrew Gilligan’s report for the Daily Telegraph on George Galloway’s stunning victory in the Bradford West by-election.

Predictably, Gilligan presents his readers with the familiar right-wing narrative about Galloway’s campaign being based on a communalist appeal to Muslim voters. This was, Gilligan asserts, “the first election for a generation or more so nakedly fought through the invocation of race and faith”.

Given that Muslims make up only 38% of the electorate in Bradford West, you might wonder how Galloway managed to gain 56% of the vote on that basis. Indeed, as Gilligan himself concedes, Galloway “won across the seat, in the mixed and mainly white wards of Thornton & Allerton, Heaton, and Clayton & Fairweather Green as well as in the inner-city wards”. In other words, far from running a sectarian campaign that pitted Muslims against non-Muslims, Galloway managed to unite voters from all communities behind his candidacy.

But then, as the Hutton Inquiry found many years ago, Gilligan’s malicious and biased journalism has never had more than the most distant relationship with the facts.

Toronto: Islamic bookshop sells Maududi’s writings shock

Maududi Process of the Islamic RevolutionAn Islamic bookstore in east Toronto is selling books that urge Muslims to usurp the Western world and install an Islamic State in its place. The books, written by deceased Islamic scholar Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, are available at the Islamic Circle of North America bookstore in Scarborough.

“Islam wishes to destroy all States and Governments anywhere on the face of the earth which are opposed to the ideology and programme of Islam regardless of the country or the Nation that rules it,” Maududi wrote in Jihad in Islam. “Islam requires the earth – not just a portion – but the whole planet.”
