Lutfur Rahman ate my hamster

East London News replies to yet another witch-hunting article attacking Tower Hamlets mayor Lutfur Rahman and his supporters, noting: “The point of the Telegraph article is not only to have a go at Tower Hamlets but also to have a go at Ken Livingstone in the run up to the election of London Mayor on 3rd May.”

Now, who do you suppose wrote that witch-hunting article? Yes, right first time, it was Andrew Gilligan. That’s the same Andrew Gilligan who was forced to resign from the BBC after the exposure of his inaccurate reporting and was saved by Boris Johnson who gave him a job at the Spectator. Gilligan evidently feels this is a debt that still needs repaying.

Tory MP’s anti-halal bill rejected

An attempt by a Bradford MP to make it law for all halal and kosher meat to be clearly labelled, allowing shoppers to have freedom of choice, has been thrown out.

Shipley MP Philip Davies said people had a right to know what they were eating and a change in the law would benefit everyone. He said: “My Bill would benefit those people who want to make sure their meat is kosher or halal before purchasing it, just as much as those who want to make sure it isn’t kosher or halal.”

But Manchester Gorton MP Gerald Kaufman opposed the Bill, forcing MPs to vote, on grounds Mr Davies was singling out two minorities. He said he would not have opposed the Bill if it had a wider scope, including labels on any chicken being sold that had been kept in “dreadful conditions”.

MPs voted by 73 against Mr Davies’ Bill and 70 in favour.

Temple University, Philadelphia: protestors condemn Geller and Spencer’s ‘irrational hatred’

Temple University protestProtestors who had filled the auditorium seats at an anti-Muslim event on Temple University’s campus Monday night left the room quite empty when they marched out in opposition after the discussion began.

The organization hosting the “Islamic Apartheid Conference,” Temple University Students for Intellectual Freedom, says its mission is to introduce controversial issues often left out of mainstream debates and defends its right to political incorrectness. Panelists at the conference included Robert Spencer, contributor to the blog Jihad Watch, and Pamela Geller, famous for her hostility to the proposed construction of an Islamic community center near the site of the World Trade Center.

Brookfield, Milwaukee: crowd largely supports mosque amid sharia law concerns

Brookfield forumReligion dominated a forum Monday about a proposed mosque in Brookfield, with nary a question about traffic or location, as most in the audience backed the facility for the Islamic Society of Milwaukee.

Amid concerns about sharia law and Muslim treatment of women, a crowd largely supported a proposed mosque in Brookfield, applauding a man who apologized to local Muslims for some of the negative reaction they have faced.

Lars Hedegaard acquitted on anti-Muslim hate speech charge – Mad Mel still not entirely happy

Over at her Daily Mail blog (which used to be hosted by the Spectator until they got hit by a costly libel action) Melanie Phillips hails as “a victory” the decision by Denmark’s Supreme Court to overturn the conviction of Lars Hedegaard on a charge of inciting hatred against Muslims.

Mad Mel’s only criticism is that Hedegaard was acquitted on the technicality that he had made the offensive statements in the course of an interview which he claimed he had no idea would be published and therefore had “no intention of disseminating his remarks to a wider audience”. Whereas Phillips evidently believes Hedegaard should have the absolute right to incite hatred against Muslims without any restriction whatsoever.

It appears to have escaped Phillips’ attention that Article 266b of the Danish Penal Code, under which Hedegaard was charged, was originally introduced in 1939 in order to defend Denmark’s Jewish community against the incitement of hatred by far-right antisemites. Presumably Phillips thinks that was a mistake.

Peter Hitchens on the Islamification of Britain

Peter Hitchens argues that deporting Abu Qatada is a diversion:

The real Islamist threat to Britain and the rest of Europe comes from uncontrolled mass migration from Muslim countries. Combined with our national refusal to defend our British, Christian culture, this is rapidly creating a powerful and influential Muslim vote which will increasingly change our country.

Given a few more decades, it will have profoundly altered this country. I have long suspected that this island will be more or less Muslim within a century, and it will be the fault of this generation.

German interior ministry caught in Muslim study leak lie

Neukölln graffiti
‘Integrate!’ Anti-Muslim graffiti in Neukölln

Germany’s Interior Minister was forced to admit on Friday that his ministry had leaked a controversial study on young Muslims in the country to populist Bildnewspaper – despite initial denials.

Hans-Peter Friedrich and the tabloid newspaper both presented the study as showing that young Muslims were not integrating into German society – infuriating the authors who said their presentation was a gross distortion of what they actually said.

The study, released at the end of February, was led by Wolfgang Frindte of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, who spoke of his team’s “despair” at the way the complex 760-page study was spun by the government and Bild.

Islam scholar Armina Omerika on Wednesday resigned from the Islam conference currently taking place in Berlin over host Friedrich’s handling of the study.

Friday’s revelation, in a Süddeutsche Zeitung report, suggests there was some collusion between the ministry and the paper over the timing of the study’s release.

Wilders’ new book aimed at US market may appeal only to his ‘small, rich and fanatical group of followers’

Wilders book coverA new book by Geert Wilders aimed at the American market is not due to be officially launched until May 1, but details gleaned from advance and review copies are already doing the rounds.

The book is entitled Marked for Death, Islam’s war against the West and me and according to Wilders’ own website “tells the story of Geert Wilders’ fight for the right to speak what he believes: namely that Islam is not just a religion but primarily a dangerous ideology which is a threat to Western freedoms.”

Another inflammatory anti-Muslim headline in the Mail

Daily Mail Eid rape headline

That’s the headline to an article in today’s Daily Mail, reporting on the conviction of a group of men for abducting, assaulting and raping two girls, aged 15 and 16.

The article quotes one of the convicted men as claiming that sex with the two girls was consensual: “It was Eid. We treated them as our guests. OK, so they gave us [sex] but we were buying them food and drink.”

And that single quote is the sole the basis for an inflammatory headline that plays to the poisonous far-right racist myth that Muslims are directed by their faith to sexually molest young girls.

‘The only responsible vote in France next Sunday is one for Marine Le Pen’

“Her defence of French national identity in the country with Europe’s most numerous Muslim minority is credible, whereas Sarkozy’s betrays his increasingly impotent opportunism.”

Richard Waghorne advocates support for the French far right on the Mail‘s blog RightMinds, 20 April 2012

Here Waghorne merely echoes Le Pen’s own criticism of Sarkozy.
