Thousands gather in Norway to sing song Breivik hates

Oslo 'Children of the Rainbow' demonstration

Tens of thousands of rose-waving Norwegians gathered in rain-drenched Oslo Thursday to deride mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik by singing a song he hates, viewing it as Marxist indoctrination.

Some 40,000 people, according to police, massed in the rain at a square near the courthouse where Breivik is on trial for his July 22 attacks that killed 77 people, to sing “Children of the Rainbow” by Norwegian folk singer Lillebjoern Nilsen.

Inside the court, the 33-year-old accused right-wing extremist sat listening without showing emotion to powerful testimony from survivors of his bloodbath on the ninth day of his trial.

‘Islam is an enemy of Christianity’ says former Danish government minister

Islam in Europe draws our attention to a controversy in Copenhagen over the future of churches in the city that have fallen into disuse. The suggestion by one pastor that the buildings could be used by Muslims, Buddhists or Hindus apparently caused an outcry.

Morten Skrubbeltrang, secretary of the foundation that owns half the churches due to be closed, rejected the proposal that they should be sold to Muslims or other non-Christian faith communities, stating that he “fears there will be public resistance if a church is converted into a mosque”.

In an email to the Berlingske news agency former government minister Birthe Rønn Hornbech reportedly backed Skrubbeltrang’s opposition to non-Christian faiths taking over the buildings – particularly in the case of Islam, which she described as an enemy of Christianity.

Hornbech was forced to resign from her position as minister for integration last year following the revelation that her ministry had with her knowledge unlawfully refused citizenship to young stateless Palestinians living in Denmark.

Racist attacks on Islamic centre in Altrincham

Altrincham Islamic Cultural CentreHale’s Islamic Cultural Centre has been hit by a series of series of racially motivated attacks in the past month.

The Grove Lane site has had windows smashed four times overnight since April 1, with items as large as house bricks and coping stones. CCTV has now been installed in the hope of deterring more attacks at the Centre, which is home to an interfaith community group.

Trustee Amjad Latif said: “We want this to stop now before it escalates any further. Our emotions have changed from anxiety to anger as the incident continue. We feel this is a deliberate attack on the Muslim community.”

Dutch ‘burqa ban’ may go after government falls

With the collapse of the Dutch centre-right government, the Netherlands may now drop some of its most eye-popping proposals aimed at Muslims and other immigrants and could soften its strong anti-immigration rhetoric.

A ban on Muslim face veils, such as the Arabic-style niqabs that leave the eyes uncovered and Afghan-style burqas that cover the face with a cloth grid, is less likely to go ahead after the government collapsed at the weekend.

Nazi-saluting pub landlord says he was just pointing at the TV … and he left the EDL because ‘unsavoury characters’ had joined it

Barry Smith pointing at TV (2)A pub landlord pictured with his arm aloft in front of an Ulster flag says: “I was just pointing to a television screen.”

The photograph of Barry Smith has been circulated on the internet by campaigners who claim it appears to be a Nazi-style salute. But Mr Smith insists that his pose in the photograph, taken by one of his friends in a German bar as they watched a TV broadcast of a match in the 2006 World Cup, is innocent.

It was republished on the website by the campaign group Portsmouth Nazi Watch, having first been posted by Mr Smith on his Facebook page. Mr Smith, who runs The Alma Arms, in Highland Road, Eastney, says he has since deactivated his Facebook page on advice from police.

Lutfur Rahman ate my hamster

East London News replies to yet another witch-hunting article attacking Tower Hamlets mayor Lutfur Rahman and his supporters, noting: “The point of the Telegraph article is not only to have a go at Tower Hamlets but also to have a go at Ken Livingstone in the run up to the election of London Mayor on 3rd May.”

Now, who do you suppose wrote that witch-hunting article? Yes, right first time, it was Andrew Gilligan. That’s the same Andrew Gilligan who was forced to resign from the BBC after the exposure of his inaccurate reporting and was saved by Boris Johnson who gave him a job at the Spectator. Gilligan evidently feels this is a debt that still needs repaying.

Klassekampen writes it used Alexa to examine eight sites that allegedly inspired Anders Behring Breivik and his manifesto. It claims its investigations revealed readership groups to websites Gates of Vienna, Jihad Watch, The Brussels Journal, Islam Watch, Atlas Shrugged, Tundra Tabloid, Vladtepesblog and The Green Arrow showed a clear pattern.

When presented with the results, Andreas Malm, journalist and author of the book The Hate Against Muslims, told the paper, “The typical profile of conspiracy theorists are elderly, lonely men, who become obsessed with a particular question, and who may be attracted to anti-Islamic conspiracy theories.”

Pentagon suspends class teaching ‘inflammatory’ material on Islam to officers

The Pentagon has suspended a course for military officers that officials say contained inflammatory material about Islam.

Defense Department spokesman Capt. John Kirby said Wednesday that among problems with the course taught at Norfolk, Va., was a presentation that asserted the United States is at war with Islam. Kirby noted that officials across two American administrations have stressed that the U.S. is at war with terrorists who have a distorted view of the religion.
