‘Thousands’ of London Muslims back Anjem Choudary, claim US rightwingers

Robert Spencer“Across town from the site of the recent attempted car-bomb attacks, several thousand Muslims gathered in front of the London Central Mosque to applaud fiery preachers prophesying the overthrow of the British government – a future vision that encompasses an Islamic takeover of the White House and the rule of the Quran over America. ‘One day my dear Muslims’, shouted Anjem Choudary, ‘Islam will govern Britain!’ Choudary was a co-founder of Al Muhajiroun, the now-banned group tied to suspects in the July 7, 2005, London transport bombings and a cheerleader of the 9/11 attacks.”

That would be a reference to this protest outside the London Central Mosque, would it? As you can see, reliable estimates of the attendance at Anjem Choudary’s demonstration varied between “about 20” and “two dozen”. Now, in the fevered imagination of gibbering right-wing Islamophobes in the USA, the figure has grown to “several thousand”. But we can hardly expect anything better from Robert Spencer, the self-proclaimed expert on all things Islamic who once assured Jihad Watch readers that Al Muhajiroun was “Britain’s largest Muslim group“!

BNP backs Butt

“Muslim extremists are targeting Scottish people because they what [sic] to destroy our British Christian way of life and replace it with an Islamic state. It is not about Iraq, it’s not about Afghanistan, it is about the Islamic Jihad for this country. We exist in their minds in Dar al-Harb or the House of War, which is the term used to refer to those areas outside Muslim rule i.e. Scotland.”

BNP regional voices, 2 July 2007

Sounds like the fascists have taken their inspiration from Hassan Butt. And why not? His line of argument feeds their Islamophobic ravings.

Robert Spencer is a fan, too: “Butt here says what I have said for years: that the jihad arises from Islamic imperatives, not from the actions of the West.”

US border guards deport Canadian Muslims

Milgo Noor had an appointment at 3:30 p.m. this past Sunday to look at bridesmaid dresses in a Buffalo bridal shop. She never arrived. When the young bride-to-be tried crossing the border with her three bridesmaids – two sisters and a cousin – the women were detained for more than eight hours and two of them were escorted back into Canada in handcuffs.

Shortly after Noor, 26, showed her citizenship to a U.S. border guard at the Peace Bridge, more than a dozen customs officers “charged” at her vehicle, starting an ordeal that she said stripped her of her dignity. For three of the eight hours, Noor and her eldest sister Rukia, 32, were held in solitary holding cells. After asking repeatedly why they had been detained, they were laughed at by U.S. border officials. “You have no rights here,” they were told. “You came to us.”

Their rooms had a chair bolted to the floor, a wall-mounted surveillance camera and an alarm that sounded every 30 minutes. They were searched by border officials wearing gloves, the women said, as well as being fingerprinted and photographed. Noor said they were held without food or water. They sat while border officials ate pizza in front of them. “We asked for water and no one would even look at us. They told us to ‘Shut up and sit down’,” Noor said.

Mohamed Elmasry, national president of the Canadian Islamic Congress, said the incident does not surprise him. He says his organization receives about five complaints per week from Canadian Muslims who feel they have been treated unfairly at a U.S. entry point. “They’re brown and they have a Muslim name. There’s two strikes against them,” Elmasry said, adding that had the women been wearing the hijab it would have been three.

His organization advises Canadian Muslims to avoid travelling to the United States, and issues alerts before the annual Hajj pilgrimage urging Muslims to ensure their flights do not have U.S. stopovers.

The Muslims are coming!

Johann Hari has always been one of our favourite Islamophobes. Unlike many self-styled defenders of Enlightenment values he is in fact capable of rational thought, plus he has an understanding that there is such a thing as imperialism, which always helps. And, to be fair, he does take a stand against the more egregious examples of anti-Muslim bigotry.

His piece in the next issue of The New Republic about a cruise sponsored by the right-wing magazine National Review gives an entertaining – if rather scary – insight into the Islamophobic hysteria that has gripped US conservatives:

“I am standing waist-deep in the Pacific Ocean, indulging in the polite chit-chat beloved by vacationing Americans. A sweet elderly lady from Los Angeles is sitting on the rocks nearby, telling me dreamily about her son. ‘Is he your only child?’ I ask. ‘Yes’, she answers. ‘Do you have a child back in England?’ she asks me. No, I say. Her face darkens. ‘You’d better start’, she says. ‘The Muslims are breeding. Soon, they’ll have the whole of Europe.’

“… So, you’re a European, one of the Park Avenue ladies says, before offering witty commentaries on the cities she’s visited. Her companion adds, ‘I went to Paris, and it was so lovely.’ Her face darkens: ‘But then you think – it’s surrounded by Muslims.’ The first lady nods: ‘They’re out there, and they’re coming.’ Emboldened, the bearded Floridian wags a finger and says, ‘Down the line, we’re not going to bail out the French again.’ He mimes picking up a phone and shouts into it, ‘I can’t hear you, Jacques! What’s that? The Muslims are doing what to you? I can’t hear you!’

“… The idea that Europe is being ‘taken over’ is the unifying theme of this cruise. Some people go on singles’ cruises, some on ballroom-dancing cruises. This is the Muslims Are Coming cruise. Everyone thinks it. Everyone knows it. And the man most responsible for this insight is sitting only a few tables down: Mark Steyn. He is wearing sunglasses on top of his head and a bright shirt. Steyn’s thesis in his new book, America Alone, is simple: The ‘European races’ – i.e., white people – ‘are too self-absorbed to breed’, but the Muslims are multiplying quickly. The inevitable result will be ‘large-scale evacuation operations circa 2015’ as Europe is ceded to Al Qaeda and ‘Greater France remorselessly evolve[s] into Greater Bosnia’. He offers a light smearing of dubious demographic figures – he needs to turn 20 million European Muslims into more than 150 million in nine years, which is a lot of humping – to ‘prove’ his case.

“But facts, figures, and doubt are not on the itinerary of this cruise. With one or two exceptions, the passengers discuss ‘the Muslims’ as a homogenous, sharia-seeking block – already with near-total control of Europe. Over the week, I am asked nine times – I counted – when I am fleeing Europe’s encroaching Muslim population for the safety of the United States.”

What are the Quasi Muslims really selling?

“Every day newspapers, TV shows, radio programs, new books and lectures revolve around the topic of the ‘threat’ of Islam and its relation to the West. Islam has become a commodity, a business to be exploited. The list of super stars and ‘experts’ that are part of this Hollywood-esque movement of cashing in on Islam has become quite long; at the head of the list are Quasi Muslims such as Brigiette Gabriel, Walid Shoebat, Nonie Darwish, and Ibn Warraq….

“Quasi Muslims are not only united in a deep distrust of Islam and Muslims but also in a program of vile hatemongering thinly disguised as intellectual criticism and absolute truth. In a lecture at the University of Memphis, Brigiette Gabriel called Arabs ‘Barbaric’. Walid Shoebat and Ibn Warraq have consistently claimed that Islam is the new totalitarian threat to the world, the new ‘fascism’, the new ‘Nazism’ even though these concepts are uniquely Western products. In any other circumstance or in reference to any other religion this rhetoric would be dismissed for what it is: hate speech….

“A grave consequence of legitimizing these polarizing and obscurantist personalities is that it takes away from the scholars, academics, and lay people that are engaged in real reform and criticism. Voices such as those of Tariq Ramadan, Khaled Abu Fadl, Heba Ezzat, Suhaib Webb and others are voices that have a pulse on the Muslim community and are much more deserving of a hearing from the wider public.”

Jewish activist attacks Muslims at Mighty Heart screening

Michael Winterbottom’s true-life drama A Mighty Heart, about the murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, was at the centre of a fresh controversy last night following a preview screening in Los Angeles.

At a post-film panel discussion featuring representatives from Muslim, Jewish and Christian groups, a Jewish activist denounced the event saying, “The only reason [Muslims] like this film is because it’s about a dead Jew.”

The activist said the participation of members of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) was like “David Duke co-sponsoring Schindler’s List”, referring to the former Klu Klux Klan Grand Master and Louisiana politician.

Other invited panelists included Progressive Christians Uniting, Rabbi Haim Dov Beliak, and the film’s producer Dede Gardner.

A spokesperson from the film’s US distributor Paramount Vantage said the event was designed to promote harmony. “Vantage went into the screening tonight with the best intentions,” the spokesperson said. “Like the film, this was designed to celebrate dialogue of people of diverse backgrounds and faith.”

The Jewish activist was one Allyson Rowen Taylor. Last year when the Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission voted to give an award to a local Muslim leader, Dr Maher Hathout, Taylor accused them of bowing to Muslim intimidation: “They’re afraid of the Muslim community burning cars, burning effigies and burning synagogues.”

Ignore Islam, ‘ex-Muslims’ urge

BBC News gives favourable publicity to the launch of the Worker Communist Party of Iran’s fraudulent front organisation, the so-called Council of Ex-Muslims (which claims that it “represents the views of a majority of secular-minded Muslims in Europe”), as does the Washington Post and the Daily Telegraph. See also A.C. Grayling’s ridiculous remarks (“a torch of hope in a dark quadrant of the world’s affairs”) at Comment is Free. Meanwhile, frothing-at-the-mouth right-wing US Islamophobe Michelle Malkin has hailed Maryam Namazie and her comrades as “the bravest of the brave“, who are “putting their necks on the line for Western civilization”. Malkin urges her readers: “Find a way to show your support.”
