Lars Hedegaard acquitted on anti-Muslim hate speech charge – Mad Mel still not entirely happy

Over at her Daily Mail blog (which used to be hosted by the Spectator until they got hit by a costly libel action) Melanie Phillips hails as “a victory” the decision by Denmark’s Supreme Court to overturn the conviction of Lars Hedegaard on a charge of inciting hatred against Muslims.

Mad Mel’s only criticism is that Hedegaard was acquitted on the technicality that he had made the offensive statements in the course of an interview which he claimed he had no idea would be published and therefore had “no intention of disseminating his remarks to a wider audience”. Whereas Phillips evidently believes Hedegaard should have the absolute right to incite hatred against Muslims without any restriction whatsoever.

It appears to have escaped Phillips’ attention that Article 266b of the Danish Penal Code, under which Hedegaard was charged, was originally introduced in 1939 in order to defend Denmark’s Jewish community against the incitement of hatred by far-right antisemites. Presumably Phillips thinks that was a mistake.

National Front aims to revive 70s ‘glory days’

NF Islam Out of Britain placardIn the febrile politics of the 1970s the National Front (NF) ruthlessly exploited working-class fears over immigration to create a far-right threat unseen in Britain since Sir Oswald Mosley.

The party’s shows of strength saw police and anti-fascists clash violently on the streets, while at the 1979 general election the NF was able to mobilise more than 300 candidates and attract nearly 200,000 votes.

Yet its decline was as dramatic as it was precipitous. Rocked by a series of internal feuds and the electoral success of the breakaway British National Party (BNP), within a decade the NF was commanding little more than a few dozen supporters.

Now, amid mounting fears that the far right is riding a rising tide of Islamophobia in Britain, the whites-only party is seeking to stage an unlikely comeback. At next month’s London Assembly, local council and mayoral elections it is putting up 35 candidates – the highest number it has fielded for 30 years.

Peter Hitchens on the Islamification of Britain

Peter Hitchens argues that deporting Abu Qatada is a diversion:

The real Islamist threat to Britain and the rest of Europe comes from uncontrolled mass migration from Muslim countries. Combined with our national refusal to defend our British, Christian culture, this is rapidly creating a powerful and influential Muslim vote which will increasingly change our country.

Given a few more decades, it will have profoundly altered this country. I have long suspected that this island will be more or less Muslim within a century, and it will be the fault of this generation.

March for England heavily outnumbered by anti-fascists in Brighton

MFE Brighton 2012Antifascists in Brighton have scored a fantastic success against “March for England” – an outfit with close ties with the English Defence League.

MfE supporters and flags are regularly in evidence at demos organised by the racist and fascist thugs of the EDL. Their Brighton event was also being backed by the EDL-linked racist football hooligan organisation Casuals United, which told supporters not to wear “colours” – EDL or Casuals clothing or insignia.

But it wasn’t a good day for the EDL in disguise. Around 1,000 antifascists, overwhelmingly local residents, turned out on the streets of the city today, vastly outnumbering up to 120 of the EDL’s mates, who arrived by train. The antifascist demonstrators were joined by local MP Caroline Lucas as well as some local councillors.

The EDL member who thinks ‘we need more people like Breivik’

Rob Heldane Sims EDL

His name is Rob Sims and he’s the man wearing the black EDL t‑shirt in the centre of the picture. (It is taken from his Facebook page, as is this photo which gives a clearer view of his face – and Zionist sympathies – and this one which illustrates his disturbing paramilitary inclinations.)

As we pointed out last week, Sims was responsible for posting the following comment on the EDL’s official Facebook page in response to the trial of Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik:

“We should be supporting this guy, The lot he killed where a bunch of Anti-Semite scum, These left wing idiots and muslims are making europe resemble Germany under NSDAP rule, Whats it gonna take for people to realise that we need more people like Breivik who are willing to actually fight for what he believes in.”

That was posted last Wednesday and the EDL admins still haven’t seen fit to remove it, even though it clearly comes into the category of soliciting to murder.

Breivik receives fan letters from co-thinkers who say they have been ‘inspired’ by his actions

Mass murderer Anders Breivik has received letters of support from sicko fans in the UK.

The Norwegian racist, who slaughtered 77 people last summer, has had more than 100 messages from warped well-wishers around the globe. Several of his penpals said they were “inspired” by the far-right nut. Breivik, 33, has been so overwhelmed by the volume of notes that he has been unable to reply to them all.

Knut Bjarkeid, director of the Norway’s Ila Prison, which has been holding Breivik for the past nine months, confirmed the killer received letters every day. And in a psychological report, jail psychiatrist Terje Tørrissen revealed they had been sent from Britain, Sweden, Russia and Germany, among others.

Another inflammatory anti-Muslim headline in the Mail

Daily Mail Eid rape headline

That’s the headline to an article in today’s Daily Mail, reporting on the conviction of a group of men for abducting, assaulting and raping two girls, aged 15 and 16.

The article quotes one of the convicted men as claiming that sex with the two girls was consensual: “It was Eid. We treated them as our guests. OK, so they gave us [sex] but we were buying them food and drink.”

And that single quote is the sole the basis for an inflammatory headline that plays to the poisonous far-right racist myth that Muslims are directed by their faith to sexually molest young girls.

‘The only responsible vote in France next Sunday is one for Marine Le Pen’

“Her defence of French national identity in the country with Europe’s most numerous Muslim minority is credible, whereas Sarkozy’s betrays his increasingly impotent opportunism.”

Richard Waghorne advocates support for the French far right on the Mail‘s blog RightMinds, 20 April 2012

Here Waghorne merely echoes Le Pen’s own criticism of Sarkozy.
