Another right-wing call to ‘rethink our multicultural society’

“Those close to Blair say it is now time to ask whether multiculturalism is to blame – and to accept that pockets of Muslim Britain have been allowed to become isolated and radicalised, thinking they live in an enemy state.

“It is a sign of the paucity of debate in Britain that multiculturalism is used interchangeably with ‘immigration’. It is, instead, a specific form of immigration where the foreigners are not encouraged to integrate. The alternative is the ‘melting pot’ method of integrationism used by the United States, whose newcomers must learn English, salute the flag and sign up to a set of values. They must buy into a basic idea that they have to belong. This would be seen as cultural imperialism in Britain, where a mosaic-style of immigration has been preferred. The natural consequence has been segregated ghettos – and pockets of radicalism, left alone to seethe.”

Tariq Ramadan ‘urges violence for Islam’, claims Standard

Another hysterical attack on Yusuf al-Qaradawi, from the Evening Standard. Dr al-Qaradawi, Tariq Ramadan and Azzam Tamimi of MAB are bracketed with Abu Qatada and Omar Bakri as “urging violence for Islam”.

Ken welcomes cleric who backed bombers

by Joe Murphy and Isabel Oakshott

Evening Standard, 18 July 2005

Ken Livingstone today backed an extreme Muslim cleric despite mounting calls to ban him from Britain. The Mayor said there was nothing wrong with allowing Yusuf al-Qaradawi to visit London to give a lecture.

The Egyptian-born scholar is banned from the US after praising suicide bombers as martyrs and vilifying Jews and homosexuals.

The Government is under intense pressure to stop allowing Islamic radicals to enter Britain – with a damning report today claiming extremists have been allowed to flourish in London. But today the Mayor said that the scholar should be given a voice in the wake of the London bombings.

Al-Qaradawi has been invited to make a speech to an Islamic conference in Manchester on 7 August. The 79-year-old was at the centre of uproar last year when Mr Livingstone welcomed him to City Hall despite protests. Demonstrations were mounted by a coalition of Jews, Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims and gay people. His latest visit to London will fuel criticism that the Government is playing into the hands of terrorists.

However, the Mayor says that Al-Qaradawi has condemned the London bombings. Asked if he would be welcoming the cleric again, Mr Livingstone today refused to give a direct answer. But he issued a statement which read:

“London at this time urgently needs people in all communities, above all in the Muslim community, who unequivocally condemn the bombings in London on 7 July and help us to isolate, find and deal with those considering further atrocities. I am for banning anyone who supports or is any way equivocal about condemning the terrorist attacks on London.”

Mr Livingstone said he was satisfied that Al-Qaradawi had condemned the atrocity as being wholly incompatible with Islam. He went on: “I believe it important that Britain’s Islamic community hears, through every means possible, condemnation of this from leading Islamic figures and urge them to speak out with all the means they possess on this issue.”

Declare war on economic jihad, urges Mail’s Israel correspondent

Matthew Kalman, the Daily Mail‘s correspondent in Israel, asserts that the London bombings require a ban on fundraising for charities linked to Hamas and Hezbollah. Difficult to see the logic of that, given that neither Hamas nor Hezbollah had anything to do with the London bombings – indeed, both organisations have unequivocally condemned the attacks. Needless to say, the Mail also tries to implicate Yusuf al-Qaradawi.

Guardian journalist ‘revealed as hardline Islamist’

“The Guardian newspaper is refusing to sack one of its staff reporters despite confirming that he is a member of one of Britain’s most extreme Islamist groups. Dilpazier Aslam, who has been allowed to report on the London bombings from Leeds and was also given space to write a column in last Wednesday’s edition of The Guardian, is a member of Hizb ut-Tahrir, a radical world organisation which seeks to form a global Islamic state regulated by sharia law.”

Express calls for ban on Tariq Ramadan

No place in our country for this preacher of hate

Sunday Express, 17 July 2005

Over the past 10 days, shocking evidence has emerged of the extent to which hard-line Islamic extremism has taken hold in Britain. Of the four suicide bombers, three were born here. The police are certain there is an Al Qaeda connection – there are reports that captured Al Qaeda operatives actually warned of plans to bomb London’s transport system. Against that appalling background comes the news that Home Secretary Charles Clarke is to allow Tariq Ramadan, an Egyptian-born academic who justifies terrorism, access to this country.

Carole Malone – the voice of reason

“In my gym last week, a young white woman was watching coverage of the London bombing on TV. She suddenly turned to me, ashen faced and angry, and said: ‘They’re talking as if this just affects Muslims. Why are we concentrating on placating and reassuring them when we should be concentrating on the dead and injured?’

“And she’s right. In the past week there has been less time spent talking about the victims of London’s 9/11 and more on what this atrocity means to British Muslims. To make matters worse the head of the Muslim Council, Iqbal Sacranie, has been screaming about how we keep referring to the terrorists who killed 54 people and injured 700 more as Muslim extremists: ‘Why not just call them criminals?’ he demanded. And that’s precisely the kind of idiocy that gives root to the political correctness that has allowed this country to become the world headquarters for Islamic terrorism.”

Another thoughtful piece by Carole Malone.

Sunday Mirror, 17 July 2005

But what should we do, Carol? “We can start getting things done by forbidding Tariq Ramadan to come to this country on July 24 on a lecture tour funded by the Met Police to tell us why suicide bombings in Iraq are justified. We can round up every member of Al-Muhajiroun in this country – the organisation which celebrated the death of the victims of September 11 – and chuck ’em out.”

Well, yeah, except that Tariq Ramadan opposes suicide bombings and attacks on innocent civilians, Al-Muhajiroun formally dissolved itself some months ago and therefore doesn’t have any members, and in so far as Omar Bakri still has any organised followers, most of them are British citizens, so where would they be deported to?

Crying shame of Ken

“Was anyone as sickened as I was to see Ken Livingstone crying on national TV talking about his beloved London and the assault on our capital city? This is the same Ken Livingstone who invited one of the most extremist Islamic clerics on the planet to London last year and proudly paraded him around the city on his arm.

“Just for your information, Yusuf al-Qaradawi is the lunatic who said all victims of the tsunami deserved to die, he hates women and he advocates the death of all homosexuals – preferably by burning at the stake. How dare Ken now show surprise or hurt at what has happened here? It is precisely the influence of extremist clerics that drove those four British men to become suicide bombers.”

A modest proposal for dealing with Islam

“The average American knows the so-called war on terror is not really a war on terror. He knows in his gut that what’s happening is that we are fighting another war with Islam. That’s what it is, no matter what the politicians say….

“As long as a liberal ideology of tolerance prevails in the West, Islamic terrorist will strike at will. It is a simple matter of Islam taking the liberal ideology of the West and turning this ideology against itself. It is the great irony of liberalism that by being tolerant it undermines its own existence. Liberalism now goes out of its way to encourage those who want to overthrow it. When confronted with an aggressive and intolerant force like Islam, tolerance ends with its own extinction….

“Deportation of Muslims from Western societies is not a picture the liberal press wants to see, but it may be necessary to do this. With their reluctance to assimilate, more so in Europe than in the United States, Muslim ghettos are breeding grounds for terrorists.”

Robert Klein Engler writes.
