MI5 feared British police attended terrorist camps

Well, that’s the headline to a report in the Sunday Telegraph. The article itself centres on the case of Abdul Rahman, who was forced to resign from the Metropolitan Police in 2007 over an alleged visit to a “terrorist camp” in 2001:

Abdul Rahman had been a constable for almost three years when MI5 warned that he might have visited a training camp in Pakistan when he travelled there. He resigned rather than be dismissed from the force and is now suing Scotland Yard for compensation. He says he is entirely innocent and has never been to a terrorist training camp. His lawyers say he has never been questioned, arrested or charged under terrorism legislation.

U.S. military taught officers: use ‘Hiroshima’ tactics for ‘total war’ on Islam

Dooley moderate Muslims
A slide from Lt. Col. Dooley’s presentation mocking the idea of moderate Muslims

The U.S. military taught its future leaders that a “total war” against the world’s 1.4 billion Muslims would be necessary to protect America from Islamic terrorists, according to documents obtained by Danger Room. Among the options considered for that conflict: using the lessons of “Hiroshima” to wipe out whole cities at once, targeting the “civilian population wherever necessary.”

The course, first reported by Danger Room last month and held at the Defense Department’s Joint Forces Staff College, has since been canceled by the Pentagon brass. It’s only now, however, that the details of the class have come to light. Danger Room received hundreds of pages of course material and reference documents from a source familiar with the contents of the class.

LANSING, Mich. — Supporters pushing measures that would ban implementation of foreign laws are trying to get the bills through the Michigan Legislature, a move they hope will curtail Islamic Sharia law in the U.S.

About 150 people gathered Thursday near the state Capitol to hear advocates for House and Senate bills modeled after a proposal dubbed “American Laws for American Courts” and written for a group called the American Public Policy Alliance. Similar legislation has been proposed in about two dozen states and approved in three.

On Islam, Romney doesn’t have the slightest idea what he’s talking about

“Romney is a scary conspiracy theorist when it comes to the Muslim world, and his discourse in this regard is eerily similar to that of European far-right figures such as Anders Breivik…. he sees the Muslim world as in the grip of a congeries of pan-Islamic caliphate movements against which he wants to wage a Mormon jihad with trillions of dollars of taxpayer money. But in fact almost none of the movements he mentions has anything to do with al-Qaeda or a caliphate.”

Juan Cole assesses Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s understanding of Islam.

Germany weighs ban on Salafists after clashes

German police and Salafists

Germany is considering a legal ban on ultra-conservative Salafist Muslim groups, its interior minister said on Wednesday after violent clashes with the police.

Last weekend, Salafists turned on police protecting far-right anti-Islam protesters during a regional election rally in the western German city of Bonn, injuring 29 officers, two of them seriously. Police arrested 109 people. The far-right protesters had infuriated the Salafists by waving banners showing cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad.

There have been similar clashes in other German towns in the past week, including in Cologne, where around 1,000 police were mobilized on Tuesday to keep Salafists and far-right activists far apart.

EDL defends ‘brave’ councillor over Twitter comment

The English Defence League (EDL) has supported a Bournemouth councillor who said online that it was the only group that “sticks up for the English”. Sue Anderson later apologised for the Twitter comment she made on Saturday. She also suspended herself from the Tory party and referred herself for disciplinary procedures.

Kevin Carroll, co-founder and joint leader of the EDL, said it seemed she had “bowed to pressure” from her party after expressing her views. He said: “She wouldn’t have said it if she didn’t believe it in the first place, but she’s bowed to pressure. There are a lot of politicians and MPs that feel the same way but are too scared to speak up.”

Christopher MoncktonOver at Liberal Conspiracy Sunny Hundal draws our attention to remarks made by “Lord” Christopher Monckton, a leading figure in the UK Independence Party, on a right-wing Canadian radio talk show.

One of the hosts tells Monckton that Paul Weston of the British Freedom Party was a recent guest on the show and asks him for his opinion of the BFP. Monckton expresses his regret that former UKIP members like Weston have split away from the party to join the BFP and adds: “the British Freedom Party won’t really come to anything very much, I don’t think, and I would like them all to come back and join us and we stand together”.
