BMI denounces Tories’ selection of Boris Johnson

Boris JohnsonBritish Muslim Initiative views the Conservative choice of Boris Johnson as the mayoral candidate as an affront to the sensitivities and beliefs of London Muslims. In a city in which one in eight of its population is Muslim, Johnson has demonstrated an antipathy to the Quran that borders on the realm of the bigotry.

During the debate on the religious hatred bill Johnson is recorded as saying “if this bill makes any sense at all it must mean banning the reading in public or in private of a great many passages of the Quran itself”. He also wrote in one of his articles “the Koran is full of stuff that plainly falls into that category (religious hatred)”.

Mohammad Sawalha Chair of BMI said: “In the light of such invective BMI affirms any individual aspiring to represent the people of London must demonstrate respect for all its communities. Mr Johnson is on the hostile path with the religious and ethnic minorities and he would destroy the great harmony enjoyed in London.”

Mr Sawalha further added: “What is required at this juncture is a Mayor who has the understanding of the needs of the great many communities in London and unite them, unfortunately Mr Johnson does not fit that bill. Boris Johnson’s record of hostilities and disdain for the sacred book of Muslims must automatically disqualify him from their support, to the same degree that his public offence and disrespect for black and ethnic minority communities should equally render him unworthy of their support.”

The worst of Worcester

Worcester“Think of Worcester and a vision of a pretty cathedral, rolling hills and the famous Malvern natural springs would probably come to the mind of Guardian readers…. The truth is, if you are British Pakistani or Pakistan-born male, there are few less desirable places to live in Britain than Worcester.

“Why? The following brutal attacks have occurred on Pakistani taxi drivers in recent times: • A driver was doused with petrol and set on fire. • Another was left with psychological problems after being smashed over the head with a metal bar. • Another was almost choked to death with his seatbelt. • Another was stabbed and left for dead. • In yet another incident, a driver suffered severe facial injuries after being lured by his passengers into a quiet cul-de-sac….

“Some of the community I spoke to blame the British National Party for ratcheting-up racial tensions through leaflets that complain migrant workers take up jobs previously held by ‘British’ students. Others warn of the Islamification of Britain and appeal for an end to new mosques in the city. Pakistanis claim that the attacks follow terrorism-related stories that appear in the media; it gives white racists an excuse to relieve their frustration on innocent cab drivers. Only this summer a CS gas canister was thrown into Worcester Central Mosque.”

Islam-is-Peace launches national media campaign

Islam is PeaceMonday September 24th saw the launch of a national media campaign which aims to correct misconceptions about Islam and British Muslims. The nationwide campaign is designed to educate the general public about the real views of British Muslims. ‘Islam Is Peace’ aims to break down barriers of suspicion and division, challenge stereotypes, combat prejudice, and offer an opportunity for strengthening the values of respect, tolerance and peaceful co-existence.

The official launch of the campaign will take place on the 1st of October. It will be attended by prominent figures from civil rights groups, politicians, community leaders and representatives of all faith groups.

Praising the initiative, MCB Secretary General Dr Muhammad Abdul Bari said: “The silent majority of Muslims are coming forward and now challenging the misleading and negative assumptions of our faith that exist in sections of our media. It is a brave undertaking”.

Dr Hany El Banna OBE President of Islamic Relief Worldwide said “We are pleased to support this initiative by young British Muslims who are standing up for their faith and their country. It is a commendable act of citizenship and reaching out to the wider community.”

Fight all kinds of racism – Tariq Ramadan

Tariq Ramadan 5Tariq Ramadan contributes to a forum on the subject “The one pledge I’d like to hear from the podium this afternoon”:

“Gordon Brown should pledge to reconsider the policies that divide the communities that make up British society. If we are serious about British values of democracy, freedom, equality and fairness, it is crucial to start by trying to be consistent in our domestic policies. It means fighting all kinds of racism, the old (anti-semitism) as well as the new one (against Muslims).

“It also means stopping connecting terrorism with integration: the generalisation on this topic sheds suspicion on a whole segment of the British population, while Muslims are already integrated and contribute a great deal to the richness of this country.

“And finally, it means having the courage to say that the government has to reassess its involvement in Iraq: it was and remains a great mistake. Gordon Brown will get immense recognition, nationally and internationally, if he dares to set a new independent policy for the UK, stop listening to the lies of the current US administration and take the leadership for a new, just and reasonable policy in the Middle East, and especially towards Iran.”

Thank God for ‘Islamo-Fascist Awareness Week’

“Liberals are taking over the country. Their attacks range from brainwashing students by pinko-commie professors to extreme media bias. The academic left’s support of Islamic terrorist groups is placing American citizens in perilous danger.

“This is no joke. Ask the Young Conservatives of Texas. Every year YCT releases a campus watch list of the most dangerous professors at UT. Often times these dangerous professors unpatriotically criticize President Bush, while making critical examinations of counter-terrorist policy. Without the YCT list, we all might fall into the grasp of one of those sneaky leftists….

“Thank God that the true Americans, who believe in freedom, democracy and the pursuit of the good life, are fighting back. In no way are these brave patriots blurring the line between the entirety of Islam and the extreme minority of ‘Islamo-Fascists’, which poses a serious threat. Conservative writer and activist David Horowitz is one of those people, and he is spreading the truth next month during his ‘Islamo-Fascist Awareness Week‘.

“From Oct. 22 through Oct. 27, YCT and Horowitz’s organization, the David Horowitz Freedom Center, will organize on campus. Although YCT hasn’t announced their plans for the week, they’ll hopefully find a way to pit Christianity against Islam. While this might incite more racial hostility on campus, spreading the truth about the dangers of Islamo-Fascism is worth the risk.

“Horowitz and YCT want to give a heads up to everyone that Islamo-Fascists are out to get us. Their message isn’t meant to distract from the ongoing humanitarian disasters in the Middle East or to sensationalize the issue, but instead to point out that every single U.S. citizen is in extreme and immediate danger, especially at UT.”

‘Our son is no terrorist, just a young Muslim’

The family of Mohammed Atif Siddique, the Scottish student convicted this week of al-Qaeda terrorist offences, have come together to tell of their heartache and their anger at the way he has been treated.

They described how their son adopted a stricter Islamic way of life, a change that fractured their close relationship and ultimately led to his conviction. But they insisted Atif – who faces at least ten years in prison – was not a terrorist and that his actions were similar to those of thousands of ordinary young Muslims seeking answers about al-Qaeda and the “war on terror”.

In a wide-ranging interview, the family claimed “thousands” of other people ran the risk of falling foul of the same offences for which Atif was convicted. They said he had been criminalised for carrying out research on al-Qaeda.

Atif was the first person in Scotland to be convicted under controversial new terror laws that have raised questions about the balance between civil liberties and protecting the public.

Speaking exclusively to The Scotsman, Mohammed Siddique, the father of the 21-year-old, said: “After what’s happened to my son, stop your children going on the internet in case they end up in jail. The sad thing is, why shouldn’t our young people be able to find out what is happening in Iraq or Afghanistan? Does it mean every child that goes on to a website is considered to be a terrorist? Thousands of young people in the Muslim community will have accessed the same material.”

French Muslims’ mosque rights denied by rightists

France is not providing its Muslim citizens enough Mosques to pray in. This becomes evident especially during the holy fasting month of Ramadan when worshippers are forced to pray in the streets. “We don’t have enough room for worshipers in ordinary days let alone Ramadan, which see more and more Muslims flocking to mosques for Tarawih prayers,” Al-Hajj Amadou, an official with the Fatah Mosque in Paris’ 18th district, told IOL.

Calls to facilitate the construction of stately mosques in France, home to a sizable minority of nearly six million Muslim, have largely fallen on deaf ears. Rightists stand as the main roadblock and derail strenuous efforts made by Muslims to have a proper place of worship just like other communities in France. In Montreuil, plans for building a modern-style mosque was halted after a lawsuit won by far-right politicians. The building of a stately mosque in the Mediterranean port city of Marseille – home to 250,000 Muslims – was frozen in April following a similar lawsuit.

Islamophobophobia

Rejecting the concept of Islamophobia (“fear of Islam is perfectly rational”), National Review Online columnist John Derbyshire explains the source of the Islamic threat to Western civilisation: “our troubles with immigrant Muslims are a mere aspect of our larger troubles with the great floods of Third World immigrants we have allowed to come into our countries this past forty years. This was a horrible and insane blunder….”

Derbyshire suggests a solution: “Would it be wise of Western countries, in the present state of affairs, to ‘fence off’ Islam – that is, to deny entry to foreign Muslims, to expel – regretfully, politely, and humanely, but firmly – resident foreign Muslims, and to restrict the activities of Muslim citizens (preventing them, for example, from proselytizing in our jails, or working in defense establishments)?”
