Cambridge EDL supporter sacked as pub landlord over racist Facebook comments

Ben Green

A pub landlord has been sacked after racist and violent comments were posted on his Facebook page.

Ben Green, 23, ran The Salisbury Arms in Tenison Road, Cambridge, after being given the responsibility by his parents David and Angela. Green has now been sacked and barred from the premises by his parents, who are the licensees of the pub.

The comments on his Facebook page have been condemned by both them and the pub’s brewery, Charles Wells, who described them as “disgusting”.

Comments on the page attributed to Green, who is a member of the EDL, included racist chants and descriptions of how he wants to go out and fight with “dirty Muslims”. One status update describes how Green is planning to have sex with a Pakistani woman and then tell her he is an EDL supporter so that “she’ll hate herself”. One comment states: “Hate everything Islam stands for. Hate all these women in Cambridge in burkas as well.”

Ontario: woman has niqab pulled off in assault

A Muslim woman from Mississauga, Ont., who had her niqab pulled from her face at a local mall, says her young children no longer feel secure with only her nearby.

Inas Kadri, whose assault at Sheridan Centre in Mississauga was caught on a security camera, spoke to CBC News on Tuesday as she awaits the sentencing of the woman who attacked her.

Kadri was shopping with her three-year-old son and two-year-old daughter when she was approached by two women. One of the women began swearing at her, about her religion and her veil, telling her, “Leave our country. Go back to your country,” Kadri said.

The woman can be seen in the video grabbing Kadri’s veil and pulling her off-camera. The attacker walked away while Kadri ran for help.

Drunk abused Muslim woman in headscarf

A mother-of-three racially abused a Muslim woman before spitting in the face of a police officer, a court has heard.

India McConnell, of Netley Road, Newbury Park, stood in front of a woman wearing a burka before shouting a racist slur and telling her to “go home”. Redbridge Magistrates’ Court heard the 27-year-old had been drinking the previous day and all night before the incident at 8.45am in Ilford Lane at its junction with Winston Way on October 4.

In a statement read out by the prosecution lawyer, a witness said Miss McConnell pulled up her top mimicking the woman’s head scarf before shouting the abuse. The witness said the woman was with four children, two in prams, who were “horrified”. He asked why she was shouting to which she replied: “This is England. She should go back home.”

He said she was becoming confrontational and she tried to get him into a side road. Fearing for his safety he called police. On seeing police Miss McConnell ran off through the car park of the Exchange Ilford, the court heard on Thursday. She was detained and arrested by Pc Simon Jackson and taken to Barkingside Police Station in a van. She had been kicking the door and when it was opened by Mr Jackson she remained aggressive and spat in his face, magistrates were told.

Miss McConnell pleaded guilty to using racially aggravated threatening and abusive words or behaviour but insisted she was not racist. She was bailed and will be sentenced on December 1.

German security services failed to take far-right terrorism seriously

A handout picture from a surveillance camera shows two of the suspected 'doner murderers', during a bank robbery in Arnstadt

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives urged her on Tuesday to step up the fight against right-wing extremists following the chance discovery that a group of neo-Nazis had been murdering immigrants for years.

Merkel has described as a national disgrace the existence of a cell, called the National Socialist Underground, whose members are now suspected of killing between 2000 and 2007 at least nine immigrants, eight Turks and a Greek, and a police woman.

FBI reports dramatic spike in anti-Muslim hate crime

'Ground Zero mosque' opponents3

Anti-Muslim hate crimes soared by an astounding 50% last year, skyrocketing over 2009 levels in a year marked by the vicious rhetoric of Islam-bashing politicians and activists, especially over the so-called “Ground Zero Mosque” in New York City.

Although the national statistics compiled by the FBI each year are known to dramatically understate the real level of reported and unreported hate crimes, they do offer telling indications of some trends. The latest statistics, showing a jump from 107 anti-Muslim hate crimes in 2009 to 160 in 2010, seem to reflect a clear rise in anti-Muslim rhetoric from groups like Stop Islamization of America. Much of that rhetoric was aimed at stopping an Islamic center in lower Manhattan.

Arson attack on mosque in eastern France

A mosque in eastern France was damaged after unknown attackers set fire to the building using a burning rubbish bin early Thursday, France 3 television reported.

The head of the mosque in Montbeliard, located about 170 kilometres south of Strasbourg, near the German border, discovered the fire when he arrived to open the building for morning prayers, the report said. One wall was badly damaged. The attack on the mosque is the second in a month, according to France 3.

A group calling itself Les Echappees Belles (The Lucky Escapes) claimed responsibility for the incident in tracts left near the mosque. The group – believed to be a group of women loosely influenced by right-wing extremists, according to France 3 – had claimed responsibility for setting fire to the mosque’s van in October.

Police were investigating the incident.

Muslim groups say the number of attacks on Muslims and Muslim institutions is on the increase. The Collective Against Islamophobia in France recorded 188 Islamophobic acts in 2010, mostly against institutions such as mosques.

Martin HartshornA Facebook plotter who tried to stir up riots in Grimsby at the height of the wave of disorder across the country has been jailed for three years.

Martin Hartshorn, 22, of Comber Place, Grimsby, admitted encouraging or assisting a riot and publishing inflammatory racist material on August 9.

Jonathan Sandiford, prosecuting, told Grimsby Crown Court that a wave of riots and serious public disorder was sweeping through towns and cities at the time.

Police were monitoring a Facebook community page saying: “Not rioting in Grimsby but it’s already a s***hole”. At the height of the riots, Hartshorn posted a message saying: “Whose up for a riot tonight in town?” He made racist comments, including “Let’s do our riot different. Let’s burn all the Paki shops and takeaways.” He later added: “And the Islamic centre. We can’t forget that.”

Over at the EDL Casuals United blog, the PA report is reproduced under the headline “If you are stupid enough to post race hate and threats on Facebook then you DESERVE to get banged up”. Note the absence of any condemnation of race hate and threats as such. The moral the EDL draws from the case is that you shouldn’t make the mistake of getting caught.
