EDL’s ‘political prisoner’ is a convicted sex offender

Richard Price EDLA leader of the English Defence League who was described as a “political prisoner” after being jailed for violence at a march had already been placed on the sex offenders register for downloading indecent images of children, The Timescan reveal.

The far-right group launched a campaign to free Richard Price, co-ordinator of the West Midlands division of the EDL, after he was jailed last month for violent behaviour. But Price, 41, had been convicted in June 2010 of making four indecent images of children, and possessing cocaine and crack cocaine. That conviction followed an earlier arrest in 2009 for public order offences believed to have been connected with EDL marches. Police were understood to have seized and analysed his computer, leading to the discovery of sexual images of children that he had downloaded. His home was also searched and the drugs were found.

Price admitted four counts of making indecent images of children and two charges of possessing cocaine when he appeared at Birmingham Crown Court. He was banned from owning a computer for a year, given a three-year community supervision order and ordered to sign on to the sex offenders register for five years.

Price, from Quinton, Birmingham, and Collum Keyes, 23, also from Birmingham, were among 12 people arrested when they surged through police lines during a protest in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, in May 2010. When that case came to court in December, Price admitted using threatening behaviour. He was jailed for three months and given a ten-year Criminal Anti-Social Behaviour Order banning him from attending marches outside Birmingham. Keyes, who admitted disorderly conduct, was fined £150.

When Price was jailed, EDL members launched a campaign urging supporters to write to the Prime Minister and MPs to try to “win justice for Richard Price, EDL”.

The Aston Villa supporter, who has also been linked to football hooliganism, was even likened by his supporters to a modern-day John Bunyan, the Puritan Christian preacher and author of Pilgrim’s Progress who was jailed for continuing his sermons without the permission of the established Church in the 1600s.

But today’s revelation that one of the EDL’s leading members has been convicted of sex offences will come as a huge embarrassment to a group that has struggled to shrug off its reputation as a new version of the National Front.

In recent months, particularly following the political demise of the British National Party, the EDL has begun to attract more support. Its leader, who had previously used the alias Tommy Robinson, was traced by The Times and gave his first interview using his real name. Stephen Lennon has vehemently denied that the group he started in Luton, Bedfordshire, is racist, saying that it has even set up a gay and lesbian division and given a prominent role to a Sikh supporter opposed to Islamic extremists.

Supporters of the EDL had claimed that Price became a political prisoner after he, along with Keyes, was banned from organising, controlling or travelling to any open-air protest outside Birmingham for ten years. It was the first time a Criminal Anti-Social Behaviour Order, sought by Thames Valley Police in conjunction with the National Domestic Extremism Unit, had been issued to a demonstrator connected to the EDL.

Last month, a database of EDL supporters was published on the internet. Hackers had attacked the group’s database of those who had made donations to the EDL and people who had bought clothing from its merchandise wing.

Read the defence of Price by Stephen Lennon (“Tommy Robinson”)here. According to Lennon, “Mr Price has no idea what these photos are and how they where [sic] on his computer.” Yeah, right.

You’ll note, by the way, that “Tommy Robinson” claims that “although Pricey is a trusted member, at no time has pricey ever been a leader of the EDL”. This is the same “Tommy Robinson” who just seven months ago wrote: “The EDL has only this Leadership, just for the record….Myself, Trevor Kelway, Marshy, Jack Smith, Joel Titus and Richard Price. We are the earliest founding members.”

Independent discovers ‘Islamification of Britain’

The number of Britons choosing to become Muslims has nearly doubled in the past decade, according to one of the most comprehensive attempts to estimate how many people have embraced Islam.

Following the global spread of violent Islamism, British Muslims have faced more scrutiny, criticism and analysis than any other religious community. Yet, despite the often negative portrayal of Islam, thousands of Britons are adopting the religion every year.

Estimating the number of converts living in Britain has always been difficult because census data does not differentiate between whether a religious person has adopted a new faith or was born into it. Previous estimates have placed the number of Muslim converts in the UK at between 14,000 and 25,000.

But a new study by the inter-faith think-tank Faith Matters suggests the real figure could be as high as 100,000, with as many as 5,000 new conversions nationwide each year.

Independent, 4 January 2011

That’s out of a total UK population of over 60 million. The article goes on to quote Inayat Bunglawala as saying that if Faith Matters’ figures are accurate, this “would mean that around one in 600 Britons is a convert to the faith”. It appears that the “Islamification of Britain” still has some way to go.

Update:  See also the Daily Mail, which reports:

“The number of Muslim converts in Britain has passed 100,000, fuelled by a surge in young white women adopting the Islamic faith. The figure has almost doubled in ten years – with the average convert now a 27-year-old white woman fed up with British consumerism and immorality. The numbers, revealed in a study by multi-faith group Faith Matters, have led to claims that the country is undergoing a process of ‘Islamification’.”

Muslims seen as threat in France, Germany

Four in 10 French and German people see Muslims living in their country as a “threat”, according to a poll published on Tuesday by French newspaper Le Monde.

Forty-two percent of French people and 40% of Germans questioned by pollster Ifop said they considered the presence of a Muslim community in their country “a threat” to their national identity, Le Monde said. The findings of the study “go beyond linking immigration with security or immigration with unemployment, to linking Islam with a threat to identity”, said Jerome Fourquet of Ifop, quoted by Le Monde.

Of the sample of people questioned for the survey in early December, 68% in France and 75% in Germany said they considered Muslims “not well integrated in society”. Out of these, 61% of French and 67% of Germans blamed this perceived failure on “refusal” by Muslims to integrate. Eighteen percent of those who said Muslims were not integrated in France and 15% in Germany blamed it on “racism and lack of openness by certain French and German people”.

Qaradawi denounces terrorist attack on Egyptian church, says perpetrators are ‘criminals, assassins and non-Muslims’

Qaradawi and MayorDr. Yusuf al-Qaradawi, President of the International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS), vehemently denounced the suicide attack, which happened during New Year’s Eve outside the Al-Qiddissine (The Saints) church on Saturday, killing 21 people and wounding 80 others.

Al-Qaradawi stressed that “the perpetrators of this crime are criminals, assassins and non-Muslims because Islam asserts the sanctity of human life and strongly prohibits aggression against it. Islam does not condone the killing of the innocent civilians of any nation or nationality except for a prescribed penalty. Murdering the civilians of any nationality by a group, individual or even nations at random, especially if they are celebrating in a place of worship could never be viewed as jihad and is undoubtedly against the teachings of the Qur’an and the Sunnah”.

The Qur’an, along with other divine scriptures, states that [Whosoever kills a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind] (Al-Ma’idah: 32)

Islam considers killing others as one of the gravest of sins in the sight of Allah. This heinous sin and abominable crime leads to Allah’s curse in this world and His severe punishment in the Hereafter.

The International Association of Muslim Scholars (IAMS) is appalled to see the bloody incidents that left behind great numbers of innocent civilian casualties who were killed in cold blood without any sin committed on their part.

The ethical constitution of legitimate warfare in Islam dictates that it is prohibited to kill anyone except those who are engaged in fighting. In this legitimate war, fighting is restricted to face-to-face confrontation between Muslims and the army of the aggressors. Upon seeing a woman killed in the battlefield, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) renounced the act and forbade killing women, children, the aged, monks in their hermitages, farmers in their lands, and traders. All of these are protected, so how could it be permissible to kill people who worship Allah in a religious event? This is never permitted by Islam.

Park51 opponent calls for Bieber boycott

Bieber boycott

Andy Sullivan, a Brooklyn construction worker and vocal opponent of Park51, the proposed mosque near the Ground Zero site, has found an unlikely new target: Justin Bieber.

Sullivan has rallied fellow mosque protesters in a protest against Bieber for comments the singer made in an issue of teen magazineTiger Beat in support of the community center. He has even banned his young children from hanging Bieber posters or attending his performances.

Except that Bieber never spoke to Tiger Beat about Park51. Salon’s Justin Elliott attempted to find the Tiger Beat article in question, and discovered that the piece cited by Sullivan was in fact a satirical work from a site called CelebJihad.com, which mainly features softcore celebrity porn. The proprietor of the site confirmed that the article was in fact a hoax.

Sullivan and the anti-Bieber campaign have yet to respond to this revelation.

Tulsa: man charged with hate crime, threatening Islamic school

A Tulsa man faces a hate-crime charge on allegations that he sent an intimidating letter to the Islamic Peace Academy and posted a video online showing him desecrating a Quran, court records show. Jesse Quinn Harrison, 33, was charged Tuesday with one count each of transmitting a threatening letter and malicious intimidation or harassment – what Oklahoma statutes call a hate crime.

According to the charges, Harrison is accused of sending a nine-page letter to the Peace Academy, a private school for Muslim children in Tulsa, “with the intent to intimidate.” He also made a video that shows him “smearing pork on the Quran and an Islamic religious figure and grilling those items,” according to the charge. The charge states that the video was made to “produce violence directed to others because of their religious beliefs.”

A man with the same name and Tulsa address as those listed on the charges posted on Facebook a YouTube video that matches the one described in the charges. The 5½-minute video, posted to YouTube on Oct. 1, is attributed there to a “Rockwell Porter” – a name the charges list as an alias for Harrison. The video and a brief anti-Islamic message were posted by Harrison’s account on several additional Facebook pages, including those of the White House and the FBI. On a Dec. 15 Facebook entry, Harrison threatens to “march on the Tulsa Islamic Mosque” on New Year’s Eve.

Muneer Awad, executive director of the Oklahoma Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said he didn’t know any details of the case, but he said more hostile rhetoric toward Islam has recently worked its way into the mainstream. “The rhetoric has not helped,” Awad said. “It has forced people to take an extreme stance.”

However, he said that although any threat should be taken seriously, cases such as Harrison’s are on the fringe. Many non-Muslims in Oklahoma have good relationships with the Muslim community, he said. “Whenever instances like this come up, we always have friends from the non-Muslim community to help,” Awad said.

Wilders to publish anti-Islam book

Dutch Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders will publish an anti-Islam book in the first half of 2011, he told the Telegraaf newspaper in an interview on Friday.

“The book is aimed mainly at the US market and focuses on how to combat the spread of Islam on a global level. We can do a lot here in the Netherlands, but we want to send out a strong international signal to the Arab world that a party in the centre of power in this country is fighting back,” Mr Wilders told the paper.

His Freedom Party cherishes “a wide range” of ambitions, he says in the interview. “Our first priority is to launch the International Freedom Alliance, which boils down to a platform against Islam. That will be huge.”

The book will be Mr Wilders’ second, after the publication in 2005 of a short autobiography, titled Kies voor vrijheid (Choose for Freedom).

EDL-supporting rabbi deludes himself that Jonathan Sacks would be interested in debating him on Islam

Nachum Shifren with Carroll and LennonThe rabbi who spoke at an English Defence League rally two months ago has apparently challenged Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks to a televised BBC debate on “Is Islam a religion of peace?”

Californian Nachum Shifren was the speaker at the far-right group’s October rally outside the Israeli Embassy. He called Muslims “dogs” and criticised British community leaders and rabbis for speaking out against him, saying: “To all my Jewish brothers who have called me a Nazi… I say to them they don’t have the guts to stand up here and take care of business.”

Now Rabbi Shifren, who lost a bid for a Californian state senate seat, claims he is planning a TV debate with the Chief Rabbi on “the Islamification of Britain, cultural Marxism in western liberalism, multiculturalism and its effect on the host society”.

In an email seen by the JC, Rabbi Shifren says he has set rules for the debate structure, to be followed by the Chief Rabbi and the BBC – despite no known interest in such a programme from either party.

He demands that the debate should not be moderated or edited, with no “extraneous commentary.” He adds: “The programme should not be advertised or announced using such inflammatory labelling as ‘far-right ‘extremist.’ i.e. not served up in terms that suit the Marxist-Islamist agenda of the BBC. This is strictly a bout between two combatants from which the listener and viewer may draw their own conclusions.” He also requests that no audience be present at the debate to avoid “Trotskyist structures.”

No-one from the Chief Rabbi’s office was available for comment.
