World Tae Kwon Do Federation upholds hijab ban

MONTREAL — Muslim women who participate in competitions sanctioned by the World Tae Kwon Do Federation will not be allowed to wear a hijab.

The decision came Monday following a request for a ruling from the Canadian Tae Kwon Do Federation after two young Muslim girls were banned from a competition last month in Longueuil, Que.

The world federation indicated in a letter to the Canadian federation that it does not recognize any religion and would not make any accommodation for hijabs.

The world federation is the sport’s largest organization and is recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

The rule, which forbids wearing anything under protective head-gear, remains unchanged and will be in effect when the world championships begin on Friday in Beijing. The competition is the first in a series to determine which athletes will compete in the Olympic summer games in Beijing in 2008.

The world federation also indicates in the letter the IOC agrees with its decision.

The world federation is headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, and oversees world and Olympic tae kwon do competitions.

The Canadian federation says it will accept the ruling while the Quebec Federation of Tae Kwon Do says the ruling shows it was justified in applying the rule last month in Longueuil.

Last week, the International Tae Kwon Do Federation, a separate entity which is not sanctioned by the IOC, announced it would temporarily accept competitors wearing a hijab until a committee could be formed to study the issue further.

‘Now Muslims Get Their Own Laws’

Now Muslims Get Their Own Laws“Muslim radicals have established their own draconian court systems in Britain. Controversial Sharia courts have been set up in major towns and cities to impose Islamic law and enable Muslims to shun the legitimate British legal system. Last night religious leaders and politicians expressed outrage that Sharia law is gaining an increasing foothold in our society.

“The Daily Express can reveal that one of the controversial courts has been set up in the home town of the 7/7 London bombings ringleader. Mohammed Sidique Khan was responsible for the Edgware Road Circle Line explosion which killed six people and injured 120. Our investigation has found that the Sharia court system has been set up in the heart of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, and that it is the model for others across the country which are operating outside the British legal process….

“Philip Davies, the Tory MP for Shipley, said: ‘I am absolutely appalled and find the prospect of such courts totally terrifying. Places like this should be closed down…. It simply can’t be tolerated’.”

Daily Express, 30 April 2007

Of course, the Jewish community has been operating its own Beth Din courts for years. But you can imagine the outcry that would rightly follow if the Express ran a front-page story headlined “Now Jews Get Their Own Laws in Britain”.

In the same issue of the Express Leo McKinstry whips up further Islamophobic hysteria in a comment piece that begins: “The wail of the mosque is signalling the end of traditional British justice.” Using language that could easily have been taken from a BNP election leaflet, McKinstry continues: “In a political climate of craven appeasement towards Muslim extremism, the Islamification of our country is steadily accelerating.” He observes: “Muslims continually bleat about so-called ‘Islamophobia’ but the isolation they experience from mainstream society is of their own making. British society has bent over backwards to accommodate Islam.” Indeed, “unlike in France, the hijab headscarf is allowed in schools” – a situation that McKinstry would evidently rectify if he could.

(Note, by the way, that McKinstry pays tribute to the role played by Homa Arjomand of the Worker-Communist Party of Iran in blocking the introduction of faith-based arbitration for Muslims in Ontario.)

Predictably, the fascists are full of enthusiasm for the Express report, which of course plays straight into their hands:

“The story should be a wake-up call for all British voters. It is now or never to turn back the tide of Islamic colonisation. Successive Labour and Conservative governments have betrayed the British electorate by opening the doors to waves of bogus asylum seekers, predominantly from Islamic countries in Africa and the Middle East but under Blair’s regime, Labour have not only held the door wide open, they have allowed Muslim immigrants to rearrange the furniture and displace the original occupants.

“Voters can punish the Labour traitors on Thursday by voting for the only party which will use its influence on local councils to stop any planning applications to convert houses, former pubs and other buildings into Islamic community centres, mosques or Sharia courts. A nationwide swing to the BNP will send a loud signal of protest to the establishment that we will not tolerate the creeping Islamification of our country.”

‘Hijab: a political symbol’

“Re: ‘The hijab is more than a head cover; Around the world similar head gear provides security and a tie to culture’ (Opinion, April 23). The hijab is indeed more than head cover. In some countries it is a symbol of what patriarchal societies do to dominate and oppress women. Something to celebrate here in Hamilton on the McMaster campus? I think not. The hijab in the West is more a cultural and political symbol than it is religious apparel. In some cases it represents the most radical and fundamentalist political views of Islam today.”

Muslim girl barred from taekwondo tournament over hijab

MONTREAL – A Muslim girl barred from competing in a taekwondo tournament because of her hijab was adamant yesterday that she would give up neither her sport nor her head covering. “I won’t take it off for any reason,” said 11-year-old Bissan Mansour. “Even if I can’t go to tournaments, I can continue to practise until I become world champion.”

Bissan and four of her teammates, all Muslims of Lebanese descent from the Ultimate Tae Kwon Do Club in Montreal, were told they could not compete in the Raymond Mourad provincial tournament in Longueuil unless they removed their hijabs, which were deemed a safety risk that violated competition rules.

Police probe racist slurs sprayed on prof’s door

Racist graffiti at McMasterA McMaster University professor who organized a campus day in support of Muslim students says racial slurs sprayed onto her office door have left her in complete shock.

Hamilton police have launched a hate crime investigation into the racist attack condemned by Hamilton’s Muslim community and McMaster officials. Investigators believe the incident is a backlash against last week’s Wear a Hijab Day, an event organized by associate French professor Muriel Walker to help sensitize people about Islam.

“What have I done, not just to deserve this, but to inspire this kind of strong reaction?” she said. “I am still in disbelief.”

Campus cleaning staff discovered the racist and profane graffiti on Walker’s door early Tuesday morning. They also found copies of controversial Danish editorial cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed glued to her door.

“Did I really do something that bad to trigger this whole hysteria?” Walker said

Hijab day: women at Canadian university show support

For a small piece of cloth meant to conceal the hijab has never been a more conspicuous or controversial symbol. It may be more visible than ever today at McMaster University, where a professor organized a Wear My Hijab day. Women, whether Muslim or not, were invited to wear a head scarf all day to show support for those who regularly wear it.

Professor Muriel Walker, who teaches French literature at Mac, organized the hijab day. “It can be difficult for women to wear the hijab,” she said. “I want this to help sensitize people about Islam … you should not be afraid of Muslims.”
