Man admits he ‘pulled off’ hijab

Damien_FrenchA woman felt “violated” when a man pulled off her religious headscarf – hijab – as she walked along a north Wales street pushing a pushchair.

Mold Crown Court heard that Damien French, 21, of Rhyl, had a previous conviction for animal cruelty when he fed a live zoo rabbit to an alligator. French admitted racially aggravated common assault and a racially aggravated public order offence. Adjourning sentence, the judge warned French he could still face prison.

The court heard that Shahenna Hussain, 23, had been walking with her sister and two nieces, pushing pushchairs along the street at the junction of Rhyl’s High Street and Wellington Road in April.

A witness in a shop saw French hurling abuse at a coach which appeared to be full of Asian passengers. When Miss Hussain saw him she put her head down to avoid eye contact. French and his group noticed her as she crossed the road and shouted and swore at her.

Gareth Parry, prosecuting, said: “She suddenly felt a violent grip to the top of her head, connecting with her hijab, which was fixed with two pins. But the pins were forced open.” He added: “She was particularly upset that the hijab was pulled off. She wears it to identify herself as a Muslim and in respect to her religion.”

Two police community support officers had seen what happened and French was arrested. When interviewed, he denied he had done anything improper. French initially pleaded not guilty but changed his plea in the magistrates’ court.

2007 hate crime survey published

Hate crime“In 2006, discrimination and violence against Muslims persisted throughout much of Europe. Though the number of registered incidents decreased from a peak level in 2005, after the subway bombings in London, the number of violent incidents remains high.

“In Belgium, in May, an anti-immigrant fanatic murdered a pregnant Malian au pair, and the two-year-old Belgian infant in her charge. Shortly before, he had shot and seriously wounded a woman of Turkish origin wearing a Muslim headscarf, as she sat on a bench reading. In Poland, in July, at least four men attacked a Moroccan actor at an antiracism festival in the northern city of Olsztyn, hitting him over the head with a bottle and stabbing him repeatedly, leaving him in critical condition. Both cases illustrate the double discrimination of racism and religious intolerance so frequently evident in attacks against Muslims.

“Other recent incidents have included bombings and arson attacks on mosques and Muslim institutions in many countries, including Austria, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Russia, and the United Kingdom, with attacks on Muslim cemeteries also widely reported. Assaults on individuals ranged from spitting, shoving, or the snatching of women’s headscarves, to punches and kicks and lethal bludgeoning, stabbings, and shootings. Personal assaults were often accompanied by shouted insults alluding to religion and ethnic or national origin – sometimes expressing both racism and religious hatred….

“The perpetrators included members of organized extremist movements, racist youth cultures, and ordinary people acting in a climate of xenophobia and nationalist chauvinism. In western Europe, anti-Muslim violence was driven by fears of Islamist terrorism and newly mainstream trends to present immigration and Muslim minorities as a threat to national identity.”

CAIR calls for hate-crime investigation in California mosque arson

ANTIOCH, Calif. — An Islamic group called on authorities Monday to launch a hate-crime investigation into a fire that caused $200,000 in damage to an Antioch mosque.

Investigators with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said they are treating the fire that broke out early Sunday morning at the Islamic Center of the East Bay as possible arson, but have found no evidence it was motivated by religion.

Safaa Ibrahim, executive director of the San Francisco Bay area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the fire was part of an ongoing campaign to “terrorize” members of the local Muslim community. The mosque had been vandalized several times in recent months – including multiple shots being fired through the windows and walls one night, graffiti scrawled on the walls and a break-in Friday.

Ibrahim said the blaze was apparently started by the burning of religious texts and is the latest attempt to frighten local Muslims. “It’s an act of terror, it’s an act of violence against this community and this mosque,” she said. “They targeted this as an Islamic mosque. They didn’t go to just any other building.”

Emily Hopkins, spokeswoman for the fire protection district, said investigators believe the one-alarm fire was intentionally set and have leads on a possible suspect. However, Hopkins said, there was no evidence that it was a targeted attack against Muslims.

Imam seriously injured in bloody attack at Regent’s Park mosque

Regent's Park MosqueAn imam was in a serious condition in hospital today after being attacked in a London mosque. The Muslim cleric was assaulted at Regent’s Park mosque on Friday. The 58-year-old imam, who has not been named, suffered heavy blood loss, damage to both eyes and had to undergo emergency surgery, the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said.

The MCB claim there have been a series of recent Islamophobic crimes in Britain, which they believe have been fuelled by the media. An arson attack on a mosque in Bradford on August 3 is being treated as suspicious by police. Strathclyde Police have also reported an increase in race crime in the west of Scotland since the suspected terrorist attack on Glasgow Airport on June 30.

An MCB spokesman said: “There is clearly a growing anti-Muslim climate in this country and it has some very worrying implications for all of us. It is deeply regrettable that sections of our media have been playing a key role in fomenting much of this Islamophobic prejudice and hatred against British Muslims.”

Race attacks soar after terror strike

Glasgow shop fireRacist incidents across Scotland have soared following the terrorist attack on Glasgow Airport. New figures reveal a surge in cases of violent attacks, abuse and harassment in the four weeks after the car bombing, with the worst cases including attempts to blow up an Asian shop and a mosque.

The biggest increase has been recorded in the Strathclyde region, where there were more than 250 incidents, of which more than 10% were directly linked to the airport attack on June 30.

Politicians and Muslim leaders in Scotland said the attacks showed that a minority of people were targeting Asians because they wrongly believed they are potential terrorists. Other members of the Asian community claim that the real number of attacks is much higher, with many incidents going unreported to the police.

Mosque fire treated as suspicious

Jamiyat Tabligh Ul Islam mosque fireA fire which severely damaged a Bradford mosque just before Friday prayers is being treated as suspicious by police. The blaze at the Jamiyat Tabligh Ul Islam mosque in North Side Terrace, Lidget Green, caused the ceiling on the first floor of building to collapse. Firefighters said it was believed to have started in an upstairs room.

Mosque president Mohammed Rafiq Sehgal discovered the fire 15 minutes before prayers were due to start at 1300 BST. He said a children’s homework club had finished less than an hour earlier and only two people were in the building at the time of the fire. “I think we’ve had a very lucky escape,” said Mr Sehgal. “It is very lucky that all the children had just gone home.”

Terror strikes provoke spate of racist attacks

Glasgow shop fireSince the failed terrorist attack on Glasgow airport, Strathclyde police have had to deal with more than 200 racial incidents, many of them carried out as reprisals on innocent members of the Muslim community.

Verbal and physical assaults, along with damage to property ranging from graffiti to a vehicle being driven into a shop belonging to Asians and set on fire, have been reported across the city.

Just over 10 racially motivated crimes per day, on average, have been recorded since the airport bomb attack compared with a daily average of less than seven racist incidents during April, May and June.

‘I am concerned about the rise in the number of racist incidents,’ said John Neilson, Strathclyde’s assistant chief constable. ‘However, I am also encouraged at the number of victims who have come forward and reported their experiences to the police.’
